Newcomb probably stinks but worth the try, especially for Chavez. No idea how Daniel Norris was the only lefty in the bullpen to start the year.

That’s a really good trade even if Newcomb sucks

No kidding. Chavez is beyond toast, getting anything with even a scintilla of possibility of becoming good is a great job by Jed and Carter.

I wonder if he'll mysteriously strain something and have to go to AZ for "rehab" in the pitch lab.

My guess is until rosters contract he takes a role like Rucker and Chavez of taking bulk low leverage innings. If he starts to show something that quickly he sticks on the roster, if he doesn't like you said they phantom IL him.

I'm curious about the odds of this paying off big. On the one hand Newcomb is your classically ideal change of scenery type, and his repertoire seems tailor made for Hottovy to fix. But on the other, the Braves are one of the smart orgs with pitching, so you would think they've exhausted all options.

I know his name isn't Carter Page. I know it's not. I know that's just my brain, broken on twitter and the last 5 years and this mess of a country. But...for me, that's just going to be the name I think about when the theoretical 'Cubs GM' comes up for the foreseeable future.

What an excellent move. Newcomb was very good as a reliever in 2019 when he first moved to the pen, including having basically no platoon split. A couple ugly starts in the shortened season and then he hasn't been able to throw strikes since. Seems far from a lost cause, and while he has been with multiple organizations, having been with ATL for 6 years it feels similar to having gotten a one-org guy(a personal favorite in trade targets) given how much pitching dev has changed in that time. Chavez in the best case isn't a late inning reliever, isn't someone for next year, and isn't gonna bring someone with better odds of being a MLB contributor even if he was lights out from now til July. Good good stuff.

Yeah I love this deal. There's gotta be something there still with Newcomb. He was just such a great prospect and had a few good years in the bigs already. I know the Braves DFAd him so they had to do something but kinda wild they're sending him for a guy who's basically at the end of the road.
