This is a very cynical front office. Basically treating Fields as a free option. If he turns out okay, fine, but he has to do it on his own, they won’t lift a finger to help him. Just fill out the roster the way they like and give them a shot at drafting a QB next year.

Yep, some definite self preservation going on it feels like.

Should they be treating Fields any other way? He might be “our guy” as fans, but he’s definitely not Poles’ guy.

Um, for self preservation, no.

It's an ugly reality, but about 90% of fans and owners seem to tie a GMs fate to a single roll of the dice at a QB. So Poles is gonna keep his roll in his back pocket.

But if I was a owner I'd make sure my GM felt confident that he could just try to build around a QB and not worry if they fail.

Yes.

It’s completely normal NFL conservatism to let the other group’s pick wither on the vine while you build out your roster. But it’s shooting yourself in the foot to purposely tank the offense. Poles will most likely not get a chance to draft a QB as talented as Fields. He will be able to get “his guy”, but in order to do so they’ll need to lose a lot, and the first 12 loss season is going to put an unproven GMs ass in the hot seat. As it looks right now, the offense may be bad enough to lose a ton next year.

McCaskey thinks highly of Fields. If they lose next year with a disastrous offense, the bulk of the blame will go to Pace/Nagy/Fields, but that will be a ding against Poles. He had an opportunity to help Fields, but he deliberately and rather obviously punted. George will appreciate the cost savings, but he’s going to notice a lot of the reasons why Fields didn’t stand a chance if things stay the way they look now. Poles will be on a short leash then, and unlike Pace, he won’t get two chances to hire a coach and draft a QB. He’ll have his one shot in 2023 or 2024 and if things don’t look good early, he’ll be gone.

So Poles trade both 5th for 2 later 5th and 2 6th.

I think that's a really smart move when you need picks. In these later rounds, so many of the draft grades of players are the same so it becomes even more of a crapshoot. More picks late mean more opportunity to find a nugget.

I agree. I’m not even opposed to trading one of the 5th for 2- 6th. They need to fill out their roster somehow.

I currently show that the remaining picks after the 3 trades are:

5th round: 166 and 168

6th round: 186, 203, 207

7th round: 254 255

Here’s some grades on the Bears picks. Grades are stupid but gives a little analysis at least

39. Bears: Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington

Grade: B+

Feels right for him. Bendy, unique athlete with explosive flashes. Not crazy speed or ball skills. Awesome, hard-nosed run defender. Chicago simply needs to add talent all across its roster. They get that at a premium position with Gordon.

48. Bears: Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn St.

Grade: A-

Long, explosive, hard-hitting safety who flashed in coverage in robber role. Not a lockdown-the-slot type. Smart, no-nonsense player. Size and speed specimen. More secondary reinforcement in Chicago.

71. Bears: Velus Jones Jr., WR, Tennessee

Grade: B+

YAC phenom in the Deebo Samuel mold. Kick-return speciality appears when he's catching the ball on offense. Not a route-running specialist. Crazy timed speed. Doesn't quite play to that level. Old prospect who's already 25. If he was younger, he'd have gone much earlier. Special with the ball in his hands.

168. Bears: Braxton Jones, OT, Southern Utah

Grade: A

Major sleeper OT. Has legitimate Pro Bowl OT traits. Mean streak as a blocker pops on film, too. Feet are outstanding. Does need to get a touch stronger. Dominated at small-school level. Love this with Justin Fields in mind.

174. Bears: Dominique Robinson, EDGE, Miami (Ohio)

Grade: A-

Long, angular, super explosive, somewhat raw rusher with major upside. Has to get much stronger and utilize his hands more frequently. But the outside speed rush/bend is borderline special already.

To be fair these are one of those “everyone made great picks” draft grades. Didn’t see a ton of grades below a C

Poles is a traits guy. All these guys have big athletic traits.

Speed specifically. If you look at all of these guys on Mockdraftable they're almost uniformly elite speed for their position

V. Jones - 96th percentile in the 40 Yard Dash

B Jones - 93rx

Robinson - 73rd

Thomas - 94th

Ebner - 86th

Kramer - Not listed

Kramer was sub-5 in the 40.
Any IL fans here want to weigh in on him?

Undersized, but solid. Had some injuries this past year, think an ankle injury maybe? He's played a lot of football, will be interesting to see if he can make the roster.

A lot of special teamers. Should have a couple starting DBs and the a whole lot of role players and backups and projects. One of the OL probably gets cut but most of these guys can probably make this roster.

Honestly I don't know if any of those OL get cut unless they are just really bad. Even if they wanna go sign another vet.

Borom-Whitehair-Lucas-Jenkins top 4

Thomas-Carter-Kramer for one starting spot and two backups. Jones development piece who doesn't dress

One more backup spot for Dozier, Davenport, etc.
