It's not really about qualifications with the guy, he's been out of the league for years. That's the issue. Away from the game, health issues and age. It seems predestined to be a 3 year gig and move on, one way or another. I think that works just fine as an OC installing his offensive infrastructure and setting up his assistants to battle for the OC gig in 2025, but I don't think that is a good way to treat the HC position.

Totally agreed, not my first choice mainly because of age. But I think a lot of people are instead jumping more towards "lol not even good enough for the Lions" which is a VERY different (and much less valid) convo.

Young up and coming Ryan Poles better be better than young up and coming Ryan Pace

Indeed, this is the one George McCaskey has to get correct, if so, everything else falls in place and the Bears will turn it around.

I like.

I'll take all the fluff I can get but I'm pretty sure I was reading the same stuff about Pace after he was hired

I don't know if I ever recalled any analytic fluff from Pace.

True, I just meant fluff in general. People saying they've worked with Pace and how sharp he is and what a fantastic hire it was for the Bears. The analytic praise is promising.

I underestimated George. I guess picking Ryan up at the airport helped seal the deal?

I think it was the shoes.

hope so

My interpretation is George has been 100% honest and transparent about this stuff. I really don't think a hot candidate would agree to a GM job if it came with the caveat that he had to hire an elder statesmen as HC. I think it's entirely possible that Poles likes Caldwell, and don't believe George is forcing him, or any other coach, on him.

Yeah, especially when it sounds like he had the Vikings job on the table as well. Would have just gone where he wasn't forced on a HC, unless he really hates Kirk Cousins.....which who would blame him?

Eh, even if he really hated Cousins, I don't think anyone believes that GM is gonna be beholden to him. Probably could be moved in a trade and Minny would accept a rebuild I think.

So yea I think Chicago had to be competitive with their offer and not just rely on Fields v Cousins.

I think it's a good hire and hope it's an offensive minded coach. They seem like they want an experienced HC which I don't agree with but Caldwell is the best of the bunch.

My only request is that he hangs onto and promotes Champ Kelly.

If they want an experienced coach, Doug Pederson has a Super Bowl with Nick Foles

One of my favorite things about this hire is seeing Vikings fans who last week were bragging about how Minnesota's situation was better than the Bears in every way are now throwing a fit

I can get behind a big offensive line guy at GM, considering the O-line has been the Bears' biggest issue offensively since...maybe 2006?

Yeah and KC just completely rebuilt their OL this past offseason.

The Bears would still have to offer compensation for Payton since he's still under contract through 2024, despite his retirement correct? What type of picks has this historically required teams to give up?

Speaking of the Vikings

Jesus, who has the time to do this?

well, with the undoubtedly plentiful support from viking fans everywhere via the venmo solicitation I'm sure its his full time job

lol
