Already an interesting storyline for this upcoming Sunday.....

May get a glimpse into life with an interim head coach. Matt Nagy has the Covid. I would assume he's vaccinated, so he may be able to be cleared in time for this game if he shows no symptoms.

For those counting that is: Damien Williams, Caleb Johnson, Robert Quinn, Jimmy Graham, Elijah Wilkinson, and now Matt Nagy who have gotten Covid in the last 2 weeks. Had Goldman, Ifedi and a couple linemen with it earlier this year. So, this probably isn't the last we've heard from the virus this week.

Fingers crossed Nagy is unable to coach on Sunday.

Can he clear protocol by then? I would think it's a given he's out.

I'm protocol ignorant so I have no idea.

Pretty sure you only need 2 negative tests taken 24 hours apart to be taken off the list, so we won't know until late in the week.

I think people in protocol due to close contract can get out of it with 2 negative tests.

Unless it's a situation where test was on Saturday, results weren't known till after the game Sunday, and it's 7 days from test?

I would assume no symptoms and previously vaccinated can get him back by Sunday with a couple negative tests late in the week.

Yes. For a vaccinated player/coach pretty sure it's 5 days from the test. If he has no symptoms, he can test negative Saturday and Sunday morning and be good to coach the game. If unvaccinated, it would be 10 days minimum. I'm pretty sure I read in camp that 100% of all coaching staffs league-wide are vaccinated. Those who aren't were already fired.

Ouch. So you are saying potentially he was walking around with COVID-19 yesterday, spreading it.

Probably not any correlation (in fact I would think the head coach who just coached a game yesterday testing positive for COVID would move the line the other way in anticipation of more positives) but I found this funny

Mack is out this week

And they're discussing an IR stint. Luckily a 3 week IR stint would only be 2 games as they have the bye.

But if they IR Mack, even for the 3 games, and lose to SF Sunday, they actually should conduct a firesale. Shop Quinn, Ogeltree, Hicks, Nichols, Goldman. Really any D piece, but those are the guys who might have positive value. Few are pending FA anyways.

ARob will be tricky to deal because of his salary (unless they took a contract back). And I'm inclined to only deal from the D and not take a weapon away from Fields (even one that he hasn't clicked with).

Guess I'll post this here - https://www.sportsmockery.com/chicago-bears/yet-more-damning-evidence-justin-fields-is-in-the-wrong-hands/ - if the McCaskeys truly care about winning they'll take action now. I'm convinced they do not care about winning because lack there of hasn't hit them where it counts - in the pocket book. Do not know if its possible to really make an economic impact such that they'd notice and take action.

I think it is very clear they care about winning. They just don't know how to do it. They fired a winning coach because he wasn't winning enough. They tried something different and cut bait rather quickly when it became obvious they couldn't win. Nagy won with this team early on and built up trust, but this offensive falling on his face is probably eroding that trust.

Based on what I've read, its not based on weeks its based on games missed meaning the bye week doesn't count. For instance George Kittle went on IR and was expected to only miss the minimum. He's been out 3 weeks but only 2 games, so he's not eligible to play this week against the Bears.

Although Kittle is expected to miss the three-game minimum while on IR, the soonest he can return is Week 9 with the 49ers scheduled for a bye next week. The modified IR rules indicate a player must miss three games, not three weeks, while on IR.

Yes, I was going to post this as well. Have to miss 3 games. I don't think they'll IR him because of that. But probably won't see him til after the bye.

Ah damn, I didn't realize that.

So without Mack, if Sunday turns into an embarrassing loss there will basically be a running clock of 48 hours to trade off any pieces as they'll be sitting at 3-5 with a battered D that's supposed to be the strength of the team. And while the schedule eases up a little bit they still have @GNB and ARI games and an O that's already been shut out of the endzone multiple times this year.

I honestly don't think Mack does anything as far as chances to win/lose this game. Guessing Quinn is going to be back from Covid list or they wouldn't have made this move yet. So, I don't think this moves the needle that much. The Bears will win or lose this game based on their ability to put up 20-24 points. I don't think Mack being gone means the 49ers become an offensive juggernaut (4 of 5 games w/ 21 or fewer scored). Same with the Steelers.

Well they haven't made the move yet, Nagy says they are still working through options. Maybe that is because they are waiting on word from Quinn.
