I think to me, the most damning thing about Nagy is how little the offense has changed or improves based on who's under center. Over the last few years there was a lot of intimating that "Mitch is a dummy and if I just had a REAL QB we'd show you some cool horsefeathers."

But then last year with Foles nothing changed

Now this year with Dalton nothing changed

Now this year with Fields nothing changed

Like maybe the issue with Foles was how much the pandemic borked up training camp last year? Maybe Dalton will be fine when he's not facing the Rams? Maybe Fields it's purely inexperience? Each of those are reasonable on their own, but when you've failed all four of your QBs, like it's clearly on you. It's the old Raylan Givens line, but instead of horsefeathers people it's horsefeathers quarterbacks.

To be fair, our only data point for Dalton not facing the Rams is the ~1 half he got against the Bengals when he had a 118 QB rating, so we haven't quite disproven that yet. But I'm almost certain we will as soon as he gets back to starting.

I see your 118 QB rating and raise you, 7 points scored.

I haven't been able to see the last two games as I'm in the middle of my move back to the midwest, but I guess I'm glad I didn't. I'd probably need a new tv, and not because of bumps on I-40 in New Mexico.

Matt Nagy is about as far away as it gets to comparisons of Andy Reid, which I believe the Bears brass had in mind when they brought him here. Someone needed to jumpstart the offense because they were tired of losing 17-10 games because the defense kept them in games, but the offense couldn't score points. Now, 10 points is far from a given. I really see no reason to continue with Nagy. As much as he is getting torched by the media, it's time for the Cubs brass to hear everything being said and make a move. I don't think there is anyone on the coaching staff that can fix what is currently broken, but I doubt it would be worse. I'd even go so far as to say just let the QB's go out there and call their own damn plays. You have arguably the fastest receiver corps in the NFL. Just let them run wild and throw deep over and over to get these guys top stop stacking the box. Timing routes and out routes and crossing routes over the middle and let these so called speedsters get some yards after the catch. Screens to the RB, strong TE's button hooks at the first down marker. I've never seen a team make throws behind the line of scrimmage more than the Bears. And rarely does it ever work when there are 10 guys all standing within 7 yards of the line of scrimmage.

Make some [expletive] adjustments already. And throw Nagy's stupid play call sheet in the trash. What's it titled anyway? How to score 7-10 points in 60 minutes in the NFL? Nagy will be lucky to land a job as an OC for a high school team after this debacle. It's time to put up or shut up. No blaming the Oline or QB smarts. This is all on you, Nagy. You get to practice against one of the best defenses in the league all week and this is what we get? horsefeathers you!

End rant. I'll watch the game later and add a new rant.

I know that there's this Nagy-Pace alliance where they seem in lockstep, but if Pace is all about self-preservation wouldn't it benefit him to not go down with the Nagy ship and give himself a chance to show that he built a decent roster? (I'm not saying he necessarily has, but I'm sure they are better than what they've shown so far)

I think it would behoove Pace to cut bait. There won't be many future GM jobs for him in the NFL if he goes down with Nagy. If there was ever a time he were to avoid sitting on his hands, this moment would be it, IMO.

I seriously doubt Pace has the authority (should probably say, "is in a position") to fire Nagy at this point. His "known" contract is up after this season. Some believe he signed some sort of secret extension in the offseason to avoid public criticism of rewarding failure, and to put him on the same timeline as Nagy whose contract ends after 2022. Unless both of them signed secret extensions beyond 2022, or somehow Pace got a longer one while Nagy did not, he's not really in a position to salvage his job by firing Nagy and hoping some interim guy wins a title. I think they are more likely to fire them both, and have one of their rising guys take the role on an interim basis while a coordinator acts as head coach. If the pattern holds the next guy will be a defensive minded head coach who can bring in offensive coaches to salvage Fields. Edited by jersey cubs fan

Not that I agree with it, but I can actually see a world where if Pace fires Nagy, he is retained next year. Nagy, on the other hand, is going to have to pray for some kind of miracle in order to keep his job.

I generally agree, though that doesn't mean he doesn't have authority. But it's very possible that he's all been guaranteed that his fate is sealed with Nagy. Maybe there's a 1% hail Mary play where he can still sever himself from Nagy by hoping an interim carries them to the playoffs, but then I imagine he's just stuck with the interim coach and not actually making his own hire.

So yea the best hope is McCaskey just ending it for both early. I imagine there's quite a bit of informal or even formal interviewing he could then do on the GM front in season to hopefully not be behind on the eventual coach search too.
