The Ricketts’ could not have selected a worse time to roll out the Marquee network 3 years ago.

Halfway through your sentence I was sure you were going to bring up the timing of their apparent pursuit of Chelsea

Owners are not interested in bargaining with the players. I don’t see that a season will happen any time soon.
I'm all for the players holding firm. If that means losing an entire season, so be it.

I know that's easy for me to say since it isn't my livelihood, and losing a year of an already short career is a major sacrifice, but I want to see them make it hurt for the owners. Let that lost TV revenue start hitting them in the pocketbooks again.

As Brett gets to here, and as we saw over the weekend with the four hardest line owners getting outed, it seems pretty clear that there's now some leaks coming from the ownership side. I'm curious if that's good news ("things are closer than they seem, let me nudge it a little further along"), or if this is REALLY bad ("things are horsefeathers on this side of the table, so I'm just gonna leak stuff to the media for spite").

All that said, the RSN Rebate issue is a pretty big deal, and likely the last major offramp for this conflict for quite some time. So it seems pretty clear this thing gets hammered out in the next 2-3 weeks or lasts at least 2-3 more months.

I love Grant. I wish he was a Cubs beat writer. He had another post that said something like, “my favorite thing to do on a Friday after work is to crack a beer and not watch a baseball game.”

$230 in year one is actually pretty solid. Progress a little more through the life of the deal, end up at $250-something, and I think a deal gets done.

"Strings attached" looms large though.

Obviously wring every last penny out of the owners you can, but kind of feels like the PA needs to settle tonight/tomorrow. Estimates are that the players lose ~$20M per game lost, and this is reasonably the last opportunity to get a full season in. Feels like holding out another two weeks and losing $200-$300M to get another couple percent on the CBT and the pre-arb pool would be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

If there's some poison pill in the deal that obviously changes things (and wouldn't be a surprise), but we're now in that awkward zone where the deal is a little light but no longer worth losing games for.

I agree with this. It's still a pretty bad deal for the PA given what they hoped to accomplish, but it's getting much less bad and I'm sure a lot of the union is itching to play ball now that the deal is getting at least in the neighborhood of reasonable.

I'm not a fan of an international draft, but given the limits on IFA spending in place as it is, I'm not sure it's a huge difference from what we currently have.

For purely selfish Cubs-centric reasons, an international draft was going to suck because we have one of the top guys, Fernando Cruz, in next year's class. So that's not a worry.

I see Jayson Stark suggesting that they can still fit 162 games in without moving the World Series. How much do you want to bet that 7 inning doubleheaders rear their ugly head again?

Ugly? I don't mind them in small doses

Anyway, it's Boob, but...

Sounds like the international draft is receiving major pushback from the PA and they still want the CBT thresholds higher. Not sure we'll see a deal here.

A lot of cold water here. That said I'd be pretty surprised if this thing really gets blown up over non-financial items.

In a world where the spending restrictions are already in place(meaning it theoretically doesn't cost them money or any difference is marginal), what is the primary reason that international players would view it as a non-starter? Easy for me to say but it seems silly that something like picking the best developmental system is something 1) that is a visible differentiator between orgs and 2) possible for a 16 year old from Latin America to gauge. So if the money is similar and the freedom of choice is already a bit of an illusion, is there another hangup I'm missing?
