Posting this here because he plays there now. Lonzo was a polarizing player in a town which doesn’t really follow the NBA that closely. He’s really good at some things, not so good at other things, but that last post is very true. Rooting for him to do well in Chicago.

One of my favorite players in the NBA and it sucks he came over to the Bulls toward the end of his long career. The Bulls had a chance to draft him way back when (the infamous 2001 NBA Draft) where the Bulls had the #2 and #4 picks. Jerry Krause was in charge and wanted to prove he could build a winner without MJ, Pippen and Phil Jackson... The Bulls took Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry and started the "Baby Bulls" era.

Which player was drafted in-between them at #3 in 2001?

Random thought but I just realized that 4 of the Bulls starters either went to USC (DeRozan, Vucevic) or UCLA (Ball, Lavine). Kind of random

Technically, they traded Elton Brand for Chandler and picked Curry... so they never really had a chance at Gasol, since the Clippers owned the 2nd pick. And from what I read in "Boys Among Men" by Jonathan Abrams (about the prep to pro generation) Krause only made the deal for Chandler after Gasol was picked at 3 and he knew he could pair Chandler and Curry

Eh, I guess he chose the combo, but obviously if he wanted Gasol he could have done the deal direct with LA for Brand.

I guess he was worried that Chandler would go 3 and he couldn't pair Gasol and Curry?

Well benefit of hindsight it's not like Chandler would have paired with Gasol and the next two picks were Batteir and Richardson. I'd take either.

But hey that's hindsight. He swung for the fence. Curry ended up being lazy and overweight and Chandler's supposed offensive potential was wildly overrated.

DeRozan and Vučević actually played together at USC.

They didn’t even get to the Sweet 16.

Never knew that, thanks for sharing. I always assumed that the trade was made before the Clippers picked and the Bulls asked them to take Tyson

I'm pretty sure they had conversations (Bulls and Clippers) leading up to that draft. I think that line just shows Krause and the Bulls were fixated on pairing Chandler and Curry together to form their version of the "twin towers", except it ended up being a much worse duo. I don't think Krause was ever considering drafting Gasol...

If what you say is true (and Memphis had traded for someone else at pick #3) then we keep Elton Brand and try to pair him with Eddy Curry??? That makes little sense in this counterfactual world and probably just leads to the same thing happening with us trading both of them eventually down the road.

I believe Krause and the Clippers had an agreement in place, and he definitely could've traded Elton Brand for the #2 pick before the draft started if he really wanted Pau Gasol.

i guess the bulls are bringing back home whites.

tradition yadda yadda. i don't care that much but when they made the switch it made sense to wear their better looking (red) jerseys at home like every other sport does.

I like the white jerseys at home even though the reds look cooler. It just looks weird when they wear red at home after all this time.

Most teams still wear their colors at home right? Does that mean the Bulls are going to wear white almost every game? I like the white jerseys at home too but not at the expense of rarely wearing the red jerseys.

It doesn't seem like it's been that long. I'm not in the Bulls' TV territory so I've hardly seen any games in a long time.

I think there's been a fair bit of color vs. color in the Nikefied NBA, so I wouldn't necessarily expect white on the road just because the other team wears a colored jersey.

Same. The Bulls are almost never on TNT/ESPN (because why would they be) so I've seen almost no games in a long time. I think I say Lauri play like twice

Up 40 after 3 quarters against the Pelicans. Granted no Zion and Ingram, but these guys look like they've been playing together for years. I have seen the Bulls a decent amount of the last few years, but haven't seen much of all the non-Lavine players. Lonzo looks improved from when I saw him last year. Caruso is a lot better than I thought he was. I knew he played solid defense and was athletic, but he can run an offense/fast break and is a really good passer and shooter. Honestly, I thought he was a guy that could give you a spark and experience, but I wouldn't mind him getting 30+ minutes in most games. Vuc actually seems most comfortable in 4-guard lineups.
