Gymnastic events are an individual sport that they turned into a team sport for reasons. She can do whatever the horsefeathers she wants and no one should say a word about it.

So the Mrs and I were watching the synchronized board diving, and one of the Brits left his toes slightly off the edge of the board, and the announcer lady seemed nearly angry about it. It sounded like my Mom bitching about her neighbors, and we absolutely loved it. We were doing impressions of it, and then the when the Chinese went next, she was still stuck on the toes. "Notice how they kept their TOES on the board!?". Never laughed that hard at sports announcing in my life.

that pretty well sums up why I don't like sports with judges assigning scores.

the mens 100m free did not let down - hard to believe it was a whole .06 difference - seemed closer

Similarly, Nastia Liukin has talked about 'leg separation' during the gymnastics about 8,000 times.

I finally figured out as this olympics why the swimming is the only watchable event for me. Swimming has heats in the morning and finals in the evening (reversed this year) so when you watch a session, it's all finals or at least semi-finals. For track, they seem to mix the heats with the finals so in a three hours session, there is like one or two finals and 37 heats of various events. Combined with six minutes of commercials between 20 second races, it's just not watchable. The commercials in every other event in the middle of competition make things pretty unwatchable. Overall terrible job by NBC, who also seem to want to insert ridiculous stupid pieces into the middle of events.

I fell down a rabbit hole of YouTube videos from the 1964 Tokyo games, and the gymnastics are hilarious. They barely do anything beyond back handsprings and splits. The vault is just running down the path and doing a cartwheel over the horse.

I found a good way to watch track! NBC has a replay of their broadcast online and you can skip to the events you want.

Yeah, I watched a bunch of wrestling online, but the officiating and announcing was so bad that I regretted tuning in. They got these two Brits who had NO CLUE what was going on, and they had to fake it for about three hours of footage. I felt bad for them, after a while.

The German coach from the modern pentathlon event was disqualified because she punched a horse. The horse was presumably acting up because it didn't know its rider. The rider and horse get paired together 20 minutes before the event for fairness reasons. I don't get that. You can't bring your own horse like other horse events allow for whatever reason.

US wins most golds and most overall medals. China is not happy:

If one were so inclined to engage, which would be dumb, we're at least adding Puerto Ricos one gold to the US's count.

But also it would be really dumb to get into said possing match. But just saying.

Why stop there? Why not add Canada?

Eh, I guess it depends on what angle we're taking. I was originally thinking more colonialist for USA, so see if Phillipines or Cuba or other former territories should count, but my sophomoric world history also probably recognizes the analogy broke down long ago.

But we're definitely counting the Puerto Rico gold.

That gold came from an American who ran for Puerto Rico in honor of her mother. We can definitely claim that if this guy is claiming Taiwan.
