I was told he has good peripherals...but he doesnt pass the eye test. And his recent historical data doesn't point in his favor. No idea what the Cubs are trying to change with him though. I try to be patient with projects like this, but you gotta give me something to keep the faith.

According to Boog, the Cubs lead the league in first inning HR allowed. For a team that subtracted Jon Lester from the rotation, that amazes me.

Kyle Hendricks took up the mantle as a tribute to Jon

Trevor Williams: not good enough to stick with the Pirates, but sure, we can fix him (or something)

Some time in the Pitch Lab will set him straight

Trevor Williams: not good enough to stick with the Pirates, but sure, we can fix him (or something)

i mean this is usually a pretty winning strategy, given the Bucs terrible record of tinkering too much with pitchers

I mean if they thought they found something they could fix, I don't mind them trying it. It's sort of what happened with Jake in 2013. If it works they have cheap starter production and/or a guy you can get value from at the deadline, if it doesn't you have other rotation options and you didnt spend a lot on him.

It's a great strategy if you're the A's or the Twins, not if you're a major market team in the last year of their offensive core window

Of course, that would mean not trading Darvish either, but here we are

Joe Musgrove is working out great for the win-now Padres who have spent a ton of money the last 2 years.

Jameson Taillon hasnt worked out so far but the Yankees invested in him.

Gerrit Cole helped the Astros win a pennant

The Rays are small market so it doesnt match your criteria but Tyler Glasnow is another example of a talented Pirates pitcher who was rehabbed and became an elite pitcher who pitched in the World Series last year.

Why wouldn't you take advantage of that? I get your point we shouldn't be relying on scrapheap guys while trading away guys like Darvish but the Pirates in particular have been ripe with talented pitchers that are turned around on a different team.

Tbf I don’t think they’re trying to change him or consider him a project so much as he’s cheap, healthy, and likely was better than most 5th starters on opening day rosters

I’m really looking forward to him being bounced, don’t think there was ever any expectations that Trevor Williams was going to lock down a rotation spot all year

His ERA the prior 2 years was 6.18 and 5.38. They had to have seen something they thought they could fix to get him back to 2018 performance when he was actually pretty damn good. There had to have been better pitching options out there for relatively cheap but I'm too lazy to go back and see. But I feel like coming off of his performances the previous 2 years he seems like a guy that would have signed a minor league deal with an invite to ML camp not a major league deal for $2.5m

It’s seriously unbelievable how good the Cubs bullpen has been this season. Whatever Jed and co. are doing there keep it up
