There's a bunch of hand wringing on Twitter this morning about the negative cap impacts of cutting Robert Quinn and Nick Foles but I haven't seen anything to indicate the Bears are cutting Robert Quinn or Nick Foles?

Huh? Haven't seen that.

They did some cap maneuvers with Jimmy Graham to extend most of his cap hit to 2022. That was needed just to get back under the cap apparently, as they didn't have enough "in season" buffer.

But yea, to cut Foles AND Quinn, I don't think they actually could do it. But I've felt for a while they probably should cut Foles just for the roster spot, but they'd need to restructure someone (likely Quinn) to defer some cap to accommodate Foles dead cap acceleration. But maybe just hang on to him until the trade deadline... Never know.

This seems to be the genesis, but again I haven't seen anything about them cutting those guys. I think one of the beat guys mentioned they were considering a Quinn restructure before they did Graham but that's all I've found.

I believe that’s for next year. This is the Graham maneuver that sparked it all (the good years means there’s dead cap next season too but I’m no cap expert and I’m not learning the intricacies of the cap now):

Oh that makes a lot more sense if it's a thing people are expecting this offseason rather than a thing people are expecting right now. Getting mad about it today is certainly weird and unproductive, but at least I understand the actual issue now.

I know we only won 8 games but that was the least excited I have ever been for a playoff game last year. Give me Fields and the experience all day.

My feelings on last season's playoff game, summed up:

"Oh well, extra football game that I care about the results, but I know it's going to be another inept primetime offensive performance on national TV"

"Oh wow, they are still in this if they can get a big play"

"Reverse! Oh Big play opportunity! Wims is opennnnnnnn!"

"Why is he still on this team?"

"Welp, Miller won't be on this team either"

"Oh well, they didn't deserve to be in this game anyway"

"Hey, cool catch Jimmy."

You forgot,

"Trubisky NVP Baby! Whoooo!"

What about the scenario that Dalton starts week 1, Fields is used for a few gimmick plays a couple of times a game and gets a season ending injury?

I'm just a pessimistic Bears fan, sorry. I'm in the start Fields now camp.i think he starts week 4 vs Detroit at home. Bears are 1-2, with narrow victory vs Cincinnati with Dalton.

If you're pessimistic then nothing matters. Field's leg will spontaneously combust on the 50 yard line against the Packers and they'll blow a 30-3 lead in the 4th quarter.

30-3 4th quarter lead against the pack seems awfully optimistic

Why didn't Pace restructure Grahampa's contract months ago when we could have used the additional cap space to maybe re-sign Fuller????????

He didn't create that much space.

He made $4.5MM last year and the Bears just freed up another $4.66MM in space. Fuller signed for $9MM.

I don't know what the 4.5M is in reference to, but the Graham move wasn't enough for Fuller, either way you slice it. As it is, the Gramah move gives them just a couple mil in breathing room below the cap (they were slightly over going into today).

Pretty sure Fuller was due close to 20m if they kept him. And since I'm late to the party, I'm taking the wins. I wear my jersey proudly every Sunday in hopes of a Bears victory. Even when all hope is dire with a QB like Trubisky behind center.

Well I guess I was wrong about being able to keep Fuller but it still bugs me that this wasn't done months ago.

Why? What difference does it make now verse June?

Because maybe that money could have been used on a player other than Fuller to upgrade the roster that isn't available now. It shouldn't be just now that Pace is realizing the need to restructure that horrible contract.

Tillman, Hester, Kruetz, and Briggs are all HOF eligible. Am I crazy in thinking all of them deserve it? Definitely the first 3.

you're crazy thinking those 2 above Briggs. I'd say Hester, Briggs, Kruetz, Tillman in that order

Really? I think opposite order after Hester. Hester, Tillman, Kruetz, Briggs. I don't think the latter 2 really belong. Both are pretty close, IMO, but I don't think quite uniquely good enough for HOF worthiness. Tillman's case will be really helped by the fact that his name is heard every week whenever someone knocks out a fumble. Hester is the pure definition of uniquely good. He should be 1st ballot, IMO.

Yeah, to me, those two are hall of very good guys.

And that's not to say that I think the HOF should be that exclusive. I'm just going off of how it is.

There are 19 HOF CBs, 9 of them have played after 1985. Is Charles Tillman one of the 10 best CBs to have played in the last 36 years (excluding active players and recent retirees)? I’m not saying he’s definitely not, I’m legit asking. I always saw him as a very good player but not quite HOF caliber

Look at recent CB inductees:

Rod Woodson

Charles Woodson

Ty Law

Champ Bailey

I can see him fitting in somewhere around Ty Law so maybe he does make it.

Pro football references HOF monitor doesn't put any of those guys particulary close. Obviously Hesters credentials are gonna be hard to accurately reflect with that as they're trying to compare him to WR.

Tillman going in basically on the basis of the Peanut punch? I don't know.
