Team wins all day every day. Rookie of the year guarantees nothing in the future.

it doesn't need to guarantee anything

what the hell does a first round exit with andy dalton guarantee?

they're both failed seasons and one gives you a horsefeathering rookie of the year at quarterback going forward. it doesn't need to guarantee anything to be a far better place to be in than the bears ever have been at that position.

Lol, finding out THE GD BEARS have a franchise QB and moving up the draft board is a pretty horsefeathering easy decision.

Moving up the draft board for a pick they don't own.

Brilliant.

there's more than one round to the draft...so you'd be moving up every pick.

not that this even needs to be a consideration for this to be an obvious choice.

LOL. Question sparked a lot of conversation. I posted it because I think it's actually a really tough choice. It's funny because people answering on both sides think their side is a no-brainer.

In either scenario I have years 2-4 of cheap Fields going forward.

In one scenario I have a supporting cast that went to the playoffs with horsefeathering Andy Dalton.

The other scenario is a bottom 10 team with whats a top 15 passer.

And a 4-5 game win spread. The "certainty" of answering what Fields is is worth almost nothing. FYI other past QB ROY include guys like RG3, Vince Young, and Sam Bradford.

A 2, 3, 5, and 6. Call it a 10 slot swing. It's like the value of a mid-late 3rd, net.

I'll take the wins and a playoff game.

The last time a Dalton led team made the playoffs was 2014. It's a terrible proposition that only has 1 answer: START FIELDS

I don't think you understand the poll options.

It's a dumb poll. And I know one thing for absolutely certain, Andy Dalton will never lead the 2021 Chicago Bears to the playoffs. You'd honestly have a better chance with Mitchell Trubisky

But ok, here's another way to look at it, does Andy Dalton getting the 2021 Bears into the playoffs do anything to help solve the biggest riddle the Chicago Bears have had for nearly 50 years (w/the exception of the Cutler years)who is their franchise QB? No, no it doesn't help that issue one bit. Finding out what you have in Justin Fields does, however.

Look, I want Fields to play. I think he gives them a better shot to win actually.

But answering the riddle is itself meaningless other than immediate fan satisfaction. If we're playing a dumb "would you rather" game I'm definitely taking the more wins. And I know that when Fields plays in 2022 he's got a playoff caliber support system.

Just purely from a gut reaction, I'm fairly confident the short term outlook is pretty bad for teams with a top 15 QB season who finish with a bottom 5-10 record. Just anecdotally looking at past offensive ROY winners who were QBs and none really saw a ton of immediate team success, especially by the standard of a wasted season David presented (first round exit). But pretty much all those guys were on bad teams. So it wasn't their fault. But even the two of biggest successes of former ROY in Ryan and Newton didn't reach their SB until their second contract.

So yea, give me team success all day because they're at least 2-3 seasons away from needing to have finalized their analysis on Fields. There's probably an incredibly narrow outcome of possibilities where in 4 seasons we're still asking ourselves what we have in Fields and being like, "damn, should a player him more his rookie season"

Looked at another way, there is nothing that can happen in 2021 that would change the Bears decision making in regards to Fields in 2022. They should have the same outlook and plan no matter what.

Unless Pace wakes up on March 1 and feels like he JUST HAS to slap the RFA tag on Dalton because "wow look he got us to the playoffs and I want to keep my job"

I don't know that he would, but I'm terrified he might

Just for the record, former QB ROY

Ben Roethlisberger 2004

Vince Young 2006

Matt Ryan 2008

Sam Bradford 2010

Cam Newton 2011

Robert Griffin III 2012

Dak Prescott 2016

Kyler Murray 2019

Justin Herbert 2020

The degree of confidence that a OROY would answer isn't overwhelming even.

The degree of confidence (or lack thereof) about the standing of a 6 win team, despite that season from Fields, means about the roster Pace has built... Much stronger degree of confidence that we're f'd in the short term. But "hitting" on Fields via a OROY would nonetheless solidify Pace/Nagy IMO.

only sociopaths think a winning season with playoff is failure.
