Jayson Stark with a good deep dive

I love this BTW. Obviously not all of these will (or should) be implemented in the majors, but let's get real data on the impact of each, and figure out which ones should stay. I also like the not so subtle implication that stolen bases are coming back one way or another.

What collisions are the enlarged bases meant to reduce? I wouldn't have thought that collisions at 2nd or 3rd were a big problem needing solved(and it's unclear to me that bigger bases fix the problem) and I don't see how home plate collisions would have anything to do with base size.

The entire dirt is just now base. All grass is lava and if you touch it you're out. No collisions.

Yeah I don’t really get making 2B/3rd bigger. I guess making 2B bigger, in theory, makes it a little safer on double play balls with the slide (also may be the beginning of making any sort of contact/take out slide illegal)? Making first base bigger makes a ton of sense to me. Idk why they just don’t have basically the double base there like in softball or little league (plays like the Lee-Furcal collision wouldn't or shouldn't happen as an example). The most dangerous thing to me is fixing the base so it’s not some weird rubber/plastic that has no give when sprinting and having to plant a metal spike that also gets slippery when wet/humid/damp.

I was coming to post the double base thing. My tiny hometown highschool softball team installed those in like 2002 because its obviously a good idea, and since the first day I saw them I've wondered why they aren't used in every baseball/softbal league. I dunno, I'da done that a long time ago.

1st base should be half in foul and half in fair. Or even 3/4 in foul territory. it would get rid of the need for base runners to run down the line in fair territory and interfere with 1st baseman.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

I've seen that double bag in softball leagues, it looks like

There is only one rule they should institute and it would have a cascading effect that would improve all aspects of baseball people supposedly gripe about: institute the pitch clock

PITCH CLOCK PITCH CLOCK PITCH CLOCK

https://theathletic.com/2829518/2021/09/17/can-this-minor-league-pitch-clock-solve-all-of-mlbs-problems/

And here’s the first thing they’ve noticed, since this league began experimenting with a 15-second pitch clock in June:

2021 Average Game Time, Low-A West League*

Before pitch clock: 3:02

After pitch clock: 2:41

(*Formerly the California League)

The pitch clock is 15 seconds (17 seconds with runners on base), down from 20 seconds at the upper levels of the minors. Pitchers have 15 seconds to start their delivery. Otherwise, the umpire can call an automatic ball.

The batter is required to be in the batter’s box and “attentive” to the pitcher with eight seconds left on the clock. Otherwise, it’s an automatic strike.

There's also a bunch of quotes from an MLB official(Raul Ibanez), Cal League Manager(Rico Brogna), a couple players in the league, and an MLB pitch clock skeptic(James McCann).
