I know it's just how the business works, and maybe the Cubs even talked to him about it and he's ok with it, but there's something so gross about giving the dude a huge "we want you here" pitch in free agency and then trading him a couple years later.

Was that actually the pitch though? We signed him in the middle of February, and from what I recall it was more along the lines of 'well, you weren't in the plans, but the price is finally low enough that we aren't going to pass this up'. I love Yu and don't want him going anywhere, but this wasn't some Lester type recruitment.

I am probably alone in stating this, but I wouldn't mind a Wil Myers acquisition.

Don't get me wrong, I think if we acquire him we can kiss 2021 goodbye. But he's a former top prospect with a few pretty good years under his belt, and who positively mashed last year.

I don't think he keeps it up. But given his ability to fake it in an outfield corner or at 1B, he might be attractive to a number of contenders at the deadline. So if he is hitting well, there should be some suitors.

to be fair, it's 3 years later. i get what you're saying but i feel like that's enough time for that part not to feel that gross.

plus it's a way cooler more fun team and place. i'm gonna stan the padres for the time being. i suggest the rest of you do the same.

Replacing Kyle Schwarber with worse, older Kyle Schwarber just so we could dump our best pitcher is certainly making me consider just how much I enjoy sitting in the bleachers.

Seems like if you've won 56% of your games the last 3 years and the rest of the division is openly broadcasting that they aren't trying, you'd want to focus on the couple minor moves it would take to make you comfortable favorites. But hey, what do I know.

We can hope that MLB keeps the same plan as last year, so we only play Central Division teams. We could still have a decent "regular season" with very little competition except the Twins and White Sox. Of course the playoffs would really be ugly.

Gore is 100% off the table, same with Abrams unless Contreras is involved too. Still, you could get a really nice package involving any of cronenworth, head, weathers, cantillo, etc. I wouldn't mind a chance to get any of morejon, lucchesi or strahm in the lab either.

Make Preller severely overpay.

Take on Myers;' contract to max the return because no way Ricketts would use Darvish savings on anything cool/fun anyway.

Also, horsefeathers Ricketts.

I couldn't give the slightest crap if Caratini is traded, so at least that part isn't making this absurdity any worse.

Let's say the deal is for the Myers, Cronenworth, and prospects package as is being inferred. This would presumably be the lineup next year:

LF/CF - Happ

3B - Bryant

SS - Baez

1B - Rizzo

DH - Myers

2B - Cronenworth

C - Contreras

RF - Heyward

CF/LF - TBD (Grossman?)

That'll play. But uhhh, let's not look at the rotation

Unfortunate a pitcher basically has to be in the deal because I'd love Cronenworth, head and hassell

Swap one of Head or Hassell for Wilcox? Or is he way down now

Wilcox was traded in Snell deal

Well that makes sense. Thanks

Is Cronenworth going to outproduce Nico by that much?

I think for 2021 he certainly will, plus it allows you to start Nico in AAA if you want.

Or Nico can platoon with Cronenworth and backup Baez.

If Campusano is indeed one of the guys involved, Cubs would unquestionably have the best crop of catching prospects. Edited by Tryptamine

Those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, would not elaborate on the details of the deal but said the Padres have accepted the haul they will have to send to the Cubs.

There was a time a half a season into the Yu contract when the thought of being able to trade him for anything would have been unlikely. He really became awesome again.

The Cubs have gotten really stale for me, and just coming back with the same team was going to be stale again. Considering I don't think they are going to be that good next season with or without him, I'd rather trade Yu now. It's like having a good closer when you suck. Plus there is a good chance he will be much happier playing for a top contender and living in perfect weather.

ETA: Correction. After looking at the numbers, there was a time after one full season when trading him for anything would have been unlikely. He really sucked that whole first year, didn't he?
