That’s kinda the whole point. You can only hit so many 95-100+ MPH balls. You don’t control where they go. The Cubs have a good amount tonight.

you're really determined to make excuses for the cubs if you think luck is even close to the main reason they lost tonight

I mean tonight, yes, batted ball luck was bad and cost them the game. Overall no. They have big flaws.

if you think bad luck in any way close to the main reason they lost tonight, then i don't even know what to say. that's crazy bootlicking, even for you

What was the main reason then? They had a ton of hard hit balls go for outs, in a 1 run game, that’s kind of a big deal. 8 hits at 90+ MPH went for outs tonight. Tonight was unlucky, the overall makeup of the team is still a problem.

probably the same reason the offense has been bad the whole year: they suck. they missed countless terrible pitches right down the middle with no velocity or movement, and they chased garbage our of the zone. complaining about hard hit outs after a performance like that against trevor williams and the pirates is just so ridiculous to me.

8 outs at 90+ MPH, 6 outs at 100+. Thats bad luck. There’s going to be ugly outs always. When the hard hit stuff doesn’t fall it’s going to extra suck. A few of those hard hit balls fall it changes the whole complexion of the game. Again, this overall offense has clear flaws and those showed up tonight as well. But tonight was also a bad luck night. Both can be true.

the magic number is actually 2 when you consider that the tigers/cards DH only gets made up if it determines a playoff spot. if the cardinals tie the cubs by sunday, they will have secured a spot, and won't play the DH.

Wouldn’t the Cards have the tiebreaker on winning percentage? Cubs go 33-27 (.550) so the Cards would tie at 32-26 (.552).

that would mean the cubs go 1-3 the rest of the way and the cardinals go 5-0. in that scenario, only 1 game (though sunday) goes their way, which is why 2 is basically the number

Would the league really give the Cardinals the division on winning percentage without even finishing the schedule? Horsefeathers those guys, their crazy schedule was not some luck of the draw nonsense like whatever year these Cubs had to play all 81 of their second half games in a few hours with one catcher or however it worked out.....That would be pretty insulting considering the Cubs are the only team to not have a player test positive, got delayed by 5 days right in the middle of a 5-1 run/10-3 start by those numbskulls

percentage points wouldn't matter because they'd have the tiebreaker against us anyways

Maybe it's already in the thread but the Cubs are 5-5 against the Cardinals. What's the tiebreaker?

next tiebreaker is divisional record. I'm too lazy to figure it out exactly, but if the cardinals catch the cubs, theyll have won at least 4 of 5 against the brewers, which I believe would put their divisional record above the cubs.

The Cardinals, in a much bigger fight to even make the playoffs, secure home field, avoid the Dodgers, etc....lose 12-3 to the Kansas City Royals, and have gone 6-4 in their last 10.

The Cubs, having locked up the division with a high degree of mathematical certainty for close to a week now, with no chance of catching the 1 seed and having no difference whatsoever between the 2 and 3 seed that they can control, lose a one run game and have gone 6-4 in their last 10.

Everyone here is convinced that either the Cardinals will overtake the Cubs for the division, or that the Cubs will obviously lose in the first round where they have a 75% chance of playing the Giants (who suck, and are 5-5 in their last 10), the Marlins (who suck, and are 4-6 in their last 10, and have lost 4 in a row), or the Cardinals (see above, but to be clear, also suck).

Sounds about right for this hell sham season; the Cubs best shot is to be the default winner in the contest of suckiest sucks who ever sucked.

So this article says that the DH would be played if it’s for the division also, which makes sense because the reasoning for the Cards playing it if they could catch the Pads was for home field. So magic number is still 3 since the Cards have the tiebreaker over us.

oh fun, now they're relying on the brewers and the tigers

Why are we so scared of the Cards? I get that the Cubs are crap but every time the Cards win a game or two, there's this "here come the Cards" sentiment. And obviously they could win 6 or 7 straight or run off a 6-1 stretch. After all, the Cubs had a 9-1 stretch. But the Brewers are basically the same as the Cards. Milwaukee just took 3 of 5 from the Cards a week and a half ago. The Cards also already split a DH against Detroit this month and lost 2 of 3 to the Royals. They're mediocre. They'll probably split tomorrow and split the games Sat and Sun. And if the Cubs can't win a game against the WS, the Cards would still have to sweep Detroit. Their longest win streak is 4 games and their best 7 game stretch is 5-2.

And at least through tomorrow, and probably Saturday, the Brewers will still have something to play for. Even if they get swept tomorrow, 29-31 could make the playoffs (I don't know if they would hold the tiebreakers over Cincy/Mia/Phi/SF). Detroit obviously wouldn't though.

i understand that all logic says the cubs will win the division
