I know this doesn't move the needle at all and Kemp hit pretty poorly with us after the trade, but he has great defensive versatility and seems like a really likeable guy. I'd have rather just cut Descalso (who still somehow has a roster spot).

 

You could argue maybe this paves the way for a signing but also probably not. #PTR

Yeah unless they’re replacing Kemp with Holt I don’t see this making us better this year. Kemp is better than Descalso and would’ve preferred Kemp to him as the last man on the roster to start the year.

FWIW the prospect we got back was ranked as a top 30 prospect in the A's system and seems to have a good approach at the plate/good defense at first.

Reading up, seems about as good of a prospect you can get for Kemp. He’s likely never anything but if he can stick as a COF’er maybe he can be a strong side platoon guy, he takes walks and doesn’t K at a terrible rate, seems to have a decent hit tool. Needs to add power, sounds like he could be kinda like a James Loney type bat if things break right.

My guess is the team is still looking at a Joe Panik type, and Kemp would have been redundant with that. Good to get a teeny bit of value for him, I assumed he was going to be the last guy on the bench and be unceremoniously cut once it was time to make a roster spot for Nico.

Yeah I think they still do a Panik, Duffy or Scooter deal on the low side for 2B and possibly a minor league deal with Holt being the “high end” MLB deal guy. Even Zobrist coming back could be on the table I suppose, if he wants to play.

Looking at Rivas this feels like the most Rays trade Epstein has ever made. Seems like a likely MLer already thanks to good plate discipline and from the NCAA on, already ready for AA in his second full season, seems like a hybrid between Seth Smith and Yonder Alonso. Fits the future prospect mold of NCAA + CCBL + quick to the upper minors...Feels like the end of an era though, Epstein's usually on the other side of this trade selling the A ball bat. OTOH I could totally see Rivas drawing trade interest even already. He should do well in updated system rankings and look ^^ BA's already helping out. I think he's a better prospect than Strumpf
