Cant believe we only have 2 picks (both 2nds) in the first 4 rounds. At least it means I only have to pay attention for like a 45 minute period in the 2nd round between picks 43 and 50, then can just read about who the Bears drafted with their 5(!) picks in the 5th-7th rounds.

They still have a 4th rounder.

Weird I just looked up an article and it said we only had the compensatory 4th that we ultimately traded for foles.

Yea, the other 4th I think was part of the Montgomery trade last year??

Well the Bears don't have anything from pick 50 to 163 in the 5th now. They might move around, and Pace is always game to trade future picks, but as it stands, they could miss on that tier 3 QB prospect too.

Oh that's right, I forgot that Pace decided to flush our 4th away for Foles. Fantastic.

Gambling on a 4th round QB in the draft or trading that pick for an established starter in Foles. I'll take the Foles trade.

4th round QB and maybe cap space spent elsewhere is a consideration as well, though I'd still probably take Foles

Or use the 4th on someone else and sign Newton, but it looks like they favored Foles

It's not that Foles is terrible, it's just that he had a bad contract and most importantly, no trade market and yet the Bears likely bid against themselves and lost. It was a buyer's market and they still managed to overpay.

...how much is a 4th round pick really worth?

More than Foles (unless you're the Bears).

their 5(!) picks in the 5th-7th rounds.

Just wait for 2021. They could end up with as many as 4 comp picks, all in the 6th round! That would be like 4 late round picks in a 12-15 pick spread.

I think Ifedi is going to wipe out their highest 6th round comp pick, so likely two 6ths and one 7th

Still nice to accumulate some picks

I'm kind of expecting him to not count against the comp formula. They really don't have much cap space to be offering deals above the comp line.

Hope you're right. The Over the Cap guy on Twitter predicted he would cancel out a pick, we'll see...

So depending on the nature of the incentives that sounds like it gives the Bears some cap wiggle room, if they're not likely to be earned incentives. Though if he hits them, they will take that cap hit eventually.

They are saying the current cap flexibility is 9m, but the Ifedi deal is still pending. They can still rework ARob's contract as well. I would like to see them be able to add some guys when the later roster cuts start happening.

Ifedi's deal is confirmed to be the veteran salary benefit, so it won't count in the comp formula.

Right now OTCs pick cancellation chart projects 3 6ths and 1 7th for the Bears next year. KPLs deal. Could be borderline 6th though.

Nice. Makes me wonder if it makes him even more likely to trade away a 2021 draft pick to get a 3 or 4 this year. I almost expect it to happen

For whatever Paces downfalls I do think he is going to read the draft as it comes to him and react. If he falls in love with a guy he certainly might. But he also has trade down 3 times from the 2nd round (two in one year).

So maybe he trades down from 43 and picks up a late third, but also trades up from the 5th to the late 4th by dangling a pick next year (thinking that may be the range he jumps at a QB if he isn't targreting in with 43 or 50.)

I'm not one to try to create a mock draft because I don't follow college football enough to know the prospects. I do have some fun with trying to understand markets and how teams can value picks. An article from last year talks about a newer trade value chart made to represent current rookie deals/CBA impacts, etc.

https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart-Rich-Hill.asp

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/04/10/bill-belichick-every-team-uses-the-same-draft-chart/

So I played with this calculator with the Bears picks and found a few trades to try to see what Pace could do to pick up some extra picks

Trade down w/Broncos, #43 for #46, 178, 181

Trade down w/Ravens, #46, 226 for #60, 92

Trade down w/Seahawks #50, 163 for #64, 101, 144

Trade down w/Patriots #92, 233 for #98, 172

Bears picks would be rd 2,2,3,3,4,5,5,6,6,6

60

64

98

101

144

172

178

181

196

200

I realize that the other team has to want the trade to happen and all that. And I just kinda looked at teams with lots of picks to move around with, so not a prediction in any way, but more of an example of what I hope to see happen.

The Bears should find some way to land Jalen Hurts on draft day

With the signing of Ifedi, the Bears can most certainly go in a lot of directions. I fully expect them to trade one of the 2nd's to add an extra pick to grab a QB. I doubt they extend Trubisky, and Foles has a contract that allows him to opt out as soon as next year. Given the aforementioned QB situations, QB is probably one of the most important positions of need for the Bears in the draft this year.

Don't you mean the Jets?

While not saying no to an interesting backup for Sammy Darnold and a quality mid-late QB prospect, no I didn't mean the Jets

Sam needs to be out to pasture.

I really like Jalen Hurts as a prospect and probably moreso as a person. He just seems like a really good kid, who is extremely coachable, a natural leader, and a great potential face of the franchise type. That being said, I don't touch him in the 2nd round. His actual talent says late 3rd to late 4th round. I think he's similar to what Dak Prescott was as a prospect, and he went late 4. I love the idea of setting up the 2021 team to have a QB in waiting if necessary, but not at the price of a 2nd round pick. The Bears have too many other needs (OG, OT, SS, maybe TE, and there's some WRs and CBs I wouldn't pass up at 43/50).
