Question regarding Mitch' contract, as I understand it the Bears have until May to pick up his 2021 option. However, he's still under contract for 2020 regardless of the Bears exercising the option. Why would the Bears pick up his 2021 option?

Its relatively low risk, as its only guaranteed for injury.

The positive is that if he breaks out (ha, but play along) , you have him locked in for Y5. The downside is if he is hurt you are potentially stuck.

The other option I would think is declining the option, and you have the transition tag or franchise tag in your back pocket if he were to break out. That transition tag amount I think is the same as his option. The franchise tag would be a tick more. But you'd also then lose out on that tag for anyone else. With Jackson locked up now, I'm not sure losing the tag would be a big factor in the Bears decision making process.

In the scenario where you don't give him the option and he plays okay, but not great and you let him walk, he may factor into getting you a comp pick.

There I'm sure are other nuanced differences between the options.

Thanks for the answers, I thought it may be a fairly low risk move perhaps, viewing picking up his option as a positive message to rest of the team can't hurt either.

I know this blogger is friendly with Adam Jahns and I think he might know a couple other people w/some channels. He has alluded to moves in the past like this. Who knows.

I'd be a little surprised given that Nagy wants to call plays, but he's who I'd want.

Wasn't this the guy who just called the Castillo hiring?

Yes. Not the first time he has hinted at stuff either.

Not for nothing but this picture was taken while weed was still illegal.

for as nervous as I was about the FG situation and as rough as Piniero started out, I have to say I'm ok with him going into next year. He ended the season dead center in the pack at 82.1% FG. For a guy who was kicking for the first time at Soldier Field for the year, he seems like he's figuring things out. I hope he continues to improve and becomes a staple at the position. Last years Parkey induced ptsd may never leave me, but maybe a good Piniero can help me cope.

ETA: a FG % of 85-90 next year would be a solid goal for him I think

As far as young Ks go, he's about as projectable as you can hope for. Robbie Gould was 77% his first year and that was with no attempts past 50, and even limiting his 40+ attempts. In fact it wasn't even until Robbie Gould's 5th year in the league until he made a 50+ yarder. Not saying hell be the next Robbie Gould as he has to put in the work, but he has the skills to do so with time. I think it would be worthwhile to bring in a camp leg next year, but they can avoid the circus of last year's battles at least. Maybe Nagy can focus on more important things like his QB now. :?

help me with the talking points, why is everyone so hopeful about Pat Shurmur as an OC?

He's done it at the NFL level before.

But he's also had some success at multiple spots with relatively dynamic offenses and has been involved in developing a decent list of QBs. He worked under Andy Reid with the Eagles, so there's a possibility they will have synergy.

Based on very little actual research, I feel like a lot of kickers that have stuck around in the league were shaky at first. The patron saint of field goal kicking in Chicago Robbie Gould was 21/27 (77.8) in his first season, nearly identical to Eddy's 23/28 (82.1).

edit: And Wrigley beat me to the comparison while I was typing

I didn't realize he had worked under Reid. Also don't know if this has been posted:

All the details on the Eddie Jackson contract

https://overthecap.com/player/eddie-jackson/5698/

Interesting. I'm not totally following the PPE part. Are they saying he won't be eligible for that escalation now?

If that's the case, his "new" 2020 hit is less than a million extra.

The 2021/22 hits feel pretty modest, with a lot of the hit going to 23/24 where the cap should be much higher, and it's pretty much all unguaranteed by that point wiht little dead. Basically it's a 2 year additional commitment to Eddie with non back-breaking cap hits.

So with Kyle Long retiring, it's probably no better time to make some judgments about his career. He was a 1st round pick, but 20th overall, so you expect a relatively productive career but not greatness. When he played, he was pretty good. But he was a 25 year old rookie, probably one of the biggest knocks against him coming out. He only got three full seasons in before falling apart and spent the next four in and out of the lineup due to health. I think he did enough to justify the pick, but still came up way short from what you'd hope to get from a 1st rounder, especially an interior lineman which have reputations for longevity.

At one point Long was the feather in Phil Emery's cap, with Shea McClellin the obvious gaffe and Kyle Fuller being questionable. Now, Fuller is the obvious top pick from the Emery era, while Leno is the only other notable one.

Damn, that Emery era was terrible and entirely predictable.

Still think Pace gets internal credit for righting the ship and that is why he'll get a longer rope than some would have hoped.

Obviously injuries are at times somewhat unpredictable.

In time will probably will be viewed similarly to the Tommie Harris pick. A little less impact just based on positional impact, but a brief but impactful peak that was cut short due to injury.

I would put him clearly below Tommie, who was the key that made the defense, which carried the team to the super bowl.
