I've generally been among the more pro "trade KB" people around these parts going back to last year, but I'd horsefeathering hate doing it right now. The timing is awful, since there's nothing really left to reinvest that money in. What are you going to spend that $20M on? Travis Shaw and James Paxton? At this point hold on til the deadline and hope for a strong first half.

Justin Turner and 1 of Odorizzi, Walker or Jake would be the only thing where I could see that we could come away with as good or better of a team with moving Bryant then using the money to add stuff.

Turner back to the Dodgers is the report - 2 years $34M is what I saw

From MLBTR:

Cubs are looking to add a left-handed hitting second baseman, reports Bruce Levine of 670 the Score (Twitter link). There aren’t a ton of players fitting the profile still available in free agency, unless the Cubs are interested in a reunion with Daniel Descalso or Jason Kipnis. Eric Sogard might be the cleanest fit, but he’s coming off a poor season with the Brewers. Travis Shaw remains on the open market as well; he’s primarily a corner infielder but has some experience at the keystone. Otherwise, Chicago might be left looking to the trade market to address the issue.

I sure don't know why it's taking so long to trade for Frazier as per our earlier discussion. Send the Pirates Norwood and Short or some other cheap, young spare pieces we have for him.

Probably because it will take more than that to trade for him.

Yeah I’m guessing it takes someone be in the Roederer, Abbott, Strumpf range of prospects then whatever throw ins and maybe even Bote or Nico to get Frazier. There were rumors Luis Arraez may be available earlier in the offseason. He’d be an awesome fit, great contact hitter and he has a career like .350/.390/.480 slash line vs RHP.

With his slash line and age, I'm not sure why he would be available.

His value is heavily tied to him being able to hit singles, he hasn’t graded out particularly well defensively, and most importantly, the Twins have Andrelton, Polanco, and several other players near MLB ready in middle infield.

a .480 SLG indicates he’s doing more than slapping singles

It’s a .130 IsoP since that line has a .350 AVG. A .130 IsoP is easily below average for a 2B, and that’s his best split since his overall IsoP runs just under .100.

Evan has connections to KB/his dad, so I’d say this is informed speculation vs just throwing horsefeathers out. I could see KB coming in pretty cheap on an extension with the FA market (Lindor, Seager, Correa, Story, Conforto, Javy, Freeman, Kershaw, maybe Bauer, etc.) there’s only so much money and teams willing to spend. KB could get lost in the shuffle/not prioritized and it may be wise for him to lock something up now. Doing a deal structured like Bauer maybe makes the most sense (not at his AAV level of course) but he can lock in long term money but get opt outs to get more if he performs well and we get a little discount. A 4-6 year deal in the $95-$125 mil range with some opt outs early on and front loaded seems to make sense for everyone.

The problem is going to be what the definition of "a little money" that he's willing to sacrifice. I don't think Boras and PTR will define it similarly.

boras isn't the one defining it.

It also takes another team coming in and outbidding them for him and whatever amount more, I don’t think there’s a guarantee he’s going to have some robust market. We also only have like $45 mil on the books next year. Even if the overall contract is less than whatever from other teams, we should be in a spot to give him more actual cash in the first year or two than what other teams are willing or able to do.

Like let’s say the Mets offer 5/125, straight $25 mil a year and no opt outs. If we offered 5/95 or 6/110 but the first 2-3 years he gets ~$28-35 mil a year and then he gets opt out(s) maybe that’s a trade off he’s willing to take. Little less overall guarantee, but gets more money short term and can re enter the market in the next 2-3 years to go get more money.

He may not be, but he could be pretty persuasive if the offer is too far below other offers. Boras has an ego and a reputation to uphold and Bryant knew that when he hired him. It's great to be happy where you are, but is it worth tens of millions of dollars over 5-6 years?
