the Red Sox are paying over half of what's left on Price, what a disgrace. Cubs trade Bryant and Heyward with over half his remaining contract and end up with a similar return and I will personally burn down Wrigley. The jail time would be worth it.

The Ricketts would not only get the LT savings but the insurance claim!

Probably someone like Gonsolin as the starter?

This does have some Cubs implications too. With the Angels and Twins adding starters tonight, that's two fewer places to send Quintana, and that is not great given that that's the assumed backup move if Theo doesn't get what he wants in a KB trade.

and then get a suburb to pay for a new stadium

I think the big winner in all of this are the Angels and Twins. It looks like Pederson, a starter, and a youngster for Rengifo? This isn't a slight at Rengifo, who could be a nice top of the order hitter with some pop while displaying a good glove. Still, his ceiling isn't that high, and moving on from him to upgrade the lineup in the short term AND add another pitcher, while getting a prospect? I think it's clearly worthwhile. Twins are clearly win now, and Maeda is a good SP upgrade for them at the cost of a somewhat risky, high upside pitching prospect.

As for the Dodgers, it's quite simple. It's a good deal for them, but at the end of the day, it's very simple - win the WS and keep Betts around.

For Red Sox fans, this is obviously disappointing. Still, Verdugo can hit, and I like Graterol a bit more than most. This may seem an odd comparison, but I sort of think a young Bartolo Colon could be there in Graterol. I mean, no one is going to say giving up Betts for this is great, but they backed themselves into a corner with their spending to the point that John Henry seems to be ordering this.

With such a limited set of teams that could legitimately make big splashes left, it's hard to really imagine who the Cubs are making big swaps with, and I'm more inclined to think we're bringing back the remainder of the band and hoping to see how the start of the year goes.

Verdugo's bat could play really really well in Boston, think he could be a Michael Brantley-esque hitter there and will make good use of the Green Monster

I still like our lineup's potential over the Doyers and still think Andrew Friedman can go screw goats

Just say no.

Betts, Bellinger, one of Turner or Seager probably, and a bunch of I don't cares that might leave as quickly as they came

Come on man. I’m probably one of the most optimistic guys on here when it comes to projecting our team but to say our offense has more potential, please. Betts and Bellinger have been worth 28+ WAR the last two years. Muncy has been 5.2 and 4.8 last two years, Turner has been 5+ 2 of last 4, 4+ 3 of last 4, even a “bad” Seager was at 3+ last year and at 6+ the last two fully healthy years, with Pollock, Taylor, Hernandez, Smith, Lux etc. as complementary pieces. Sure our offense could be similar if things break favorably (and probably is still a top 3-5 NL offense and top 7-10 MLB) but talking potential and more likely outcomes it’s easily the Dodgers.

I mean if KB, Rizzo, Baez, Contreras, and Schwarber all have the best years of their careers simultaneously, then yeah, I'd probably like our offense better.

But of course, the thing is that it isn't going to happen.

If LA can't win the title in a year Houston's been cleaned out by a cheating scandal, Boston gave them their best player just to count money, and the Cubs sat out the off-season just to count money, that would be depressing for them.

They should be able to sleepwalk to the World Series, but if we're betting right now I'd still put my money on the Yankees.

Will be interesting to see what Betts signs for if its with the Dodgers. The rumored deal he rejected was 10 years/$320m from Boston. It's possible he just really really wanted to test FA but might ultimately accept a similar deal, who knows.

Either way, its kind of funny that the Dodgers are always there to help whenever the Red Sox decide to dump massive amounts of salary.

Yeah, the Dodgers offense is outrageous, but it's not hard to see that pitching staff imploding, as at this point Buehler is the only guy I'd really trust to be a high end pitcher. The rest of the NL is far more flawed, but I think I'd put the Yankees a half step above and the Astros on the same level.

We're going to get The Good Place Season 5 so he can write John Henry into the bad place and a date with the penis flattener

I'm struggling to understand what the Red Sox are doing/have done.

Really? They, IMO, very clearly are valuing staying under the LT over all else.

"Get better prospects" sounds like, "you want to be rich? Then get more money, duh!"

David Price is 34 years old and due almost $100m over the next 3 seasons. He's averaged about 2 fWAR over the last three years. Even if you bump him to 3 and he gets an NL boost... that's not prime prospect stuff.

Betts is great, and you have him for 1 season: will he be the 10+ fWAR guy from 2018, the 8+fWAR guy from 2016, the 5+ fWAR guy from 2017, or the 6+ fWAR guy from 2019?

you make a good point about Price, but even at 5+ fWAR for Mookie I feel like they traded down.

at 1 year of control and David Price attached, the market for Mookie probably ended up as just the Dodgers (i'm guessing the only way the Padres were in was if they got rid of Wil Myers in the deal or a side deal)

The Red Sox put themselves in a corner and took what they could get.
