The last report I saw sounded like it could be Betts for Wil Myers, Chris Paddack/Cal Quantrill and Josh Naylor and that would be pretty meh deal for the Sox.

There is an enormous gulf between Paddack and Quantrill in value. I very much doubt Paddack is available. Quantrill, Lucchesi, Strahm, etc sure.

That's a pretty strong package. I wonder if that's straight up for Mookie or with an additional contract heading to LAD.

Yeah it is. That’s probably a package that gets KB +/- if we dealt with them.

Nope

I wouldn’t do it but I think that’s a rough package for KB dealing with them. We aren’t getting Lux or May.

I’m not sure outside the Cubble that two years of KB is worth much more than 1 of Betts. Mookie is a much better player.

They could include Lux and May with those other three and it would start to seem like they want to have a serious conversation about acquiring Bryant

Well that’s just ridiculous and unrealistic. No problem saying you wouldn’t do that rumored Mookie trade for KB, but think it’s pretty close to what a realistic trade would look like in the event he’s moved.

Trade ideas/speculations don't automatically become realistic just because the price is super low for the buyer. The Cubs don't have to take scraps because it's determined using smoke and mirrors to be realistic

A MLB ready 23 year old position player off a 2 win year with pedigree, a MLB ready SP, a top 100 prospect and another prospect I think is damn close to a package that KB returns. Certainly much more realistic than your fantasy land Lux, May + all that.

That’s pretty close value wise, in a different way, to the Braves rumors we’ve heard of Riley, Pache or Waters, and two of their pitchers.

At 23, Bryant was putting up 6+ WAR on his way to ROY after winning MiL PoY after winning the Golden Spikes. I could not possibly care less about some 2 WAR player's pedigree for Kris Bryant, even with a non-elite pitching prospect who may have been hurt last year and another guy included

They're all fantasty land nonsense, Bryant for that package is just another terrible fantasy this offseason's brought. To even consider Kris Bryant to the Dodgers for Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Caleb Ferguson in the realm of realistic is just...it's not happening

Okay? What does that have to do with anything? He’s now 28, with only 2 years of control left and while still cheaper than his real value is starting to cost meaningful money. He’s also just a year removed from a 2 win year himself. Verdugo also has more than 2 win pedigree. I think this trade is pretty close to the value KB brings back. Maybe not these exact names but what they roughly represent is it. 2 MLB ready guys that are young and controlled with having some success already and pedigree, a top 100 prospect and another prospect or two.

You want to trade Kris Bryant for him. So how does this math work? Alex Verdugo keeps getting better from 24 on, building off the 2 WAR age 23, as Bryant gets worse? Or since Bryant had a 2 WAR season once, they're on the same path now?

Verdugo also has more than 2 win pedigree.

What does this mean? 3 WAR? 4 WAR? 6 WAR?

I think this trade is pretty close to the value KB brings back.

Understood, probably explains why Bryant hasn't been traded as these supposedly realistic returns are terrible

That it could get worse, even more nameless and more faceless, is scary and why trading Bryant in itself has never been realistic

The Super Bowl is on. I don’t care to argue this. I never said I wanted to do this trade. I said I think it’s close to a realistic return we could see in the event KB is traded this offseason yet. I’d probably be indifferent and maybe a bit underwhelmed if they did this. I think Verdugo as a 23/24 year old with a 2 win season and prospect pedigree has room to grow, like most would expect out of guys that age with early success (4-6 win season as his peak seasons let’s say) and using Bryant’s age 23/24 year old season to gauge his current value is a bit disingenuous when he hasn’t been that player for a few years and is now older,/more expensive and has less control. I’m fine not doing this hypothetical trade though and I’d be fine just keeping Bryant if this is the option to moving him.

All I'm saying is that valuing your best player for scraps to teach players a lesson or whatever may seem all the rage and therefore realistic, but a realistic return requires the Cubs accepting the offer. Teams would fall over themselves to give up the Zac Gallens, Dustin Mays, Alex Verdugos, Spencer Howards, Alec Bohms etc for Kris Bryant if, realistically, those players could pull it off but they can't. Bryant hasn't been that 6+ fWAR player in two seasons, an injury year and a followup borderline 5 fWAR season, but has had more 6+ WAR seasons than <6 WAR seasons still. Alex Verdugo didn't halve that 2019 during a supposedly pre-peak season, at an age that will count as a peak for Bryant, but might approach that one day as he gets older...Beyond age and contract situation all these guys deemed realistic, as well as most of the supposedly unrealistic ones, get really shaky

You seem to think that Cubswin11 was arguing in favor of trading Bryant for someone like Verdugo, or in favor of trading him at all. Why?

There's no maybe about it; his point from the start was obviously, "this is all the Cubs could likely get for Bryant." It was very clearly not any kind of an endorsement.

Right. This was literally the start of the whole thing.

I think Heyman has tweeted some variation of this tweet daily for a week now

Here's Speier, who's a Boston source and less thirsty for rumor cred
