can someone smarter than me explain why this team decided to include Chatwood as part of a six man rotation, when they can just keep the normal five man rotation with Alzolay as the fifth starter? punting a game every week with this idiot starting doesn't seem ideal to me.

i think 2 reasons:

1 - they thought his early season stuff in long relief was encouraging and could produce ok enough results against a guy who has been shelled in his first 2 MLB starts. Remember when we used to start guys like Adam Warren and Trevor Cahill and inexplicably it worked? It always seemed to work back then just as it always seems to fail now.

2 - They are in the middle of their most difficult and strenuous stretch of the season and they want to take a chance and help keep the veteran arms like Lester and Cole (and I guess Yu) rested. Of course this goes completely against their "urgency starts in april" mantra they went on and on about in the spring, and even if this was the plan it should have been thrown out the window when Hendricks went on the DL, but who knows what the horsefeathers the FO and manager is doing these days

Warren did suck (at least until the damn instant we traded him back to the Yankees), I think he meant somebody else. Cahill was actually quite good in 15 and 16, though he only started once.

I think this may have been his last chance.

I was specifically referring to spot starts. In Warren's spot start he gave up 1 run in 5 innings although the Cubs did ultimately lose the game.

I'm just shocked that a good inning immediately turned to horsefeathers when the garbage ass bottom of the order came up.

I'm still understanding of Zo's personal leave and if he doesn't want to come back its cool, but I really wish he would find his way back to Wrigley.

Could have moved Bryant to RF and brought Bote in the game....naaaaaaaaah; bring Almora in instead, as if they're up and need the defense instead of down by 2. Sweet strategery, Joe.

Can someone explain to me why Joe batted Chatwood there with a runner on third and two outs after he's already sucked through the first 4 innings and 75 pitches???

Chatwood starting an inning off with a walk where none of the balls were particularly close to the plate????? When has that ever happened?

Clayton Richard is another guy who comes to mind in that vein.
