It's such a baffling signing. Like, sure, if you basically just needed a guy in that nebulous, "well, we need one of those rando all glove veteran types on the bench who can play several positions to give the good players rest," it still sucks, but I get it. But this was a team that was likely going to need some actually capable MI backup, and it was going to be someone who was going to get some legit playing time...and this is who they go with? Why?

Either they're dolts and think he inexplicably figured out being a capable player at horsefeathering age 32, or it's just the epitome of how cheap they're trying to go.

Like, what possibly jumped out at them in regards to Descalso over a similarly dirt cheap player like Derek Dietrich, who at least has more than one horsefeathering season of not being a turd under his belt?

I mean, granted, Happ completely flaming out in the spring, Zobrist ditching the team and Russell (ugh) still being as garbage on the field as he is off is a pretty tough 1-2-3 you aren't really planning for...BUT STILL.

He had like a 12 week hot stretch in his 9th year as a big leaguer, a career in which he had been about 20% worse than league average as a offensive player.

Not that anyone could predict his year, and not that he would get starter at bats and etc etc but if we swap La Stella for Descalso we’d be 2.5 games better than we are right now

It must be Descalso's career 83 wRC+ that gives Maddon so much confidence in his feeling.

Joe's just smarter than you everyone and every metric, didn't you know that?

Should Bryant have gone home?

I was thinking it but now there’s a double play with the pitcher up and maybe a less risky play. Dong this nerd and make it a good choice
