The holes on this team are glaring.

We just had a 6-1 home stand, but yes two games on the moon in this video game park is reason to think the sky is falling.

This string of games after getting like 10 off days for no reason in the first 40 games sorta sucks too.

Baez/bryant/Willson better get hot soon or their numbers are going to tank

You mean the Cubs record will tank.

This team is probably the 2nd best in the NL but for some odd reason I have no faith. Maybe I've been spoiled with the last 4 years

Video game park for which team again?

Please point me to all the excellent 24th and 25th men on other rosters.

I think it’s fair to say the inconsistency overall is a problem.

Please point me to all the teams that play 'consistently' well.

Javy last 14 games - .670 OPS

Willy last 17 games - .564 OPS

KB last 12 games - .609 OPS

Rizzo last 10 games - .674 OPS

conveniently picking my sample sizes of course. Every baseball player slumps, but its rough when the 4 best hitters on the team sort of slump at the same time.

7-7 over last 14, 7-10 over last 17, 6-6 over last 12, 6-4 over last 10. So even though they’re struggling we’re mostly surviving. Good thing the SP has been so good, the ebbs and flows happen and we knew this was likely our toughest stretch of the year with all these games in a row. Salvage the remaining part of the trip and get to the off day Monday to recharge.

Oh no we only have four hitters in the *checks notes* top 45 hitters in baseball (wRC), currently, and then we are forced to supplement that with *checks again* a 125 (Bote), a 105 (Heyward), and a 104 (Schwarber) hitter. That leaves one whole spot in the lineup! For a Russell (97) or Almora (84), who derive most of their value from defense!

I've read this 3 times and I still don't believe this post wasn't authored by TT.

Yeah, the Cubs were good and smart to not try and improve the offense at all. Like, do literally nothing. Like, instead actively try to make it worse by unleashing Daniel Descalso on it. It's not like it wasn't obviously going to be a season-long fight for the division again. FEAR CHANGE.

We have seven guys in the line up who are above average hitters, and at least a couple are elite. Outside of Contreras, none of them are terrible defenders, and the fact that Contreras is a borderline elite hitter at the hardest defensive position is pretty solid.

I feel like this always gets shifted back into a 'the Ricketts suck' argument. Yes, Bryce would be sweet, or Michael Brantley, or whoever else. Yes, I agree the Ricketts suck. Given this false budget we're supposedly working under, signing a hitter in the offseason could have meant no Kimbrel. What's a bigger issue on the team at this point, especially given the inherent fragile nature of a rotation with four guys in their 30s?

In conclusion, the Ricketts suck. The Cubs offense, and the Cubs in general, definitely do not suck.

It is, however, very frustrating.

And stuff like this:

We have seven guys in the line up who are above average hitters

...feels like the most technical of technicalities. The hitter's version of the laboring starting pitcher who technically gets the bare minimum needed to technically have had a quality start.

if you were talking about 7 guys who are just technically above average, and didn't include a bunch of guys who are actually way above average, you'd have a point

I figured it was painfully obvious that I wasn't talking about the 4 actual good hitters.

you quoted the part that included the word seven, and are being irrationally negative about a good offense. So, while "painfully" may actually be accurate, "obvious" was not.

Just for reference.... I know we all wanted Bryce and a lot wanted Machado (I didn't really care for him, given the contract it took and thinking he had red flags to being elite) and of course they make us better but just for reference where their current seasons would rank with the Cubs.

Machado:

WAR: 6TH with 2 guys (Almora and Heyward within .2 of him and Schwarber within .3)

wOBA: 9TH of the position players, 12th if you include Cargo and Russell

wRC+: Same as wOBA, 9TH of the position players, 12th if you include Cargo and Russell

Bryce:

WAR: 4th but only .2 away from Willy for 5th

wOBA: 6TH

wRC+: 7TH

I feel like there would be a lot of complaining about either of these guys right now and thinking the offense still wasn't that good.

I could not possibly give less of a horsefeathers if guys like Schwarber or Heyward are "technically good." That's so lame, and they really suck in almost all of the cool ways it actually matters.
