That's.....a pretty good deal but also really surprising. Didn't seem to be a reason to lock him up like that this soon.

Seems to be jumping on the trend I guess. Either way it means the FO believes in him as a long term option which is nice.

Not a real reason, but that's very cheap money for a guy who is versatile defensively and at least somewhat productive with the bat. He obviously was willing to sell some of his upside earnings for a "comfortable for life" contract. If he's worth having on the roster in 5 years he'd cost more and those options are light.

It's also kind of a "hey everybody else see what we're willing to do for you kids" situation.

I assume the Almora, Caratini and Zagunis extensions are already signed, but they want to give each player his day in the spotlight

solid move

it's not at all inconceivable that he'll exceed the value of that entire deal just this year.

I wonder if Bote had conversations with Descalso that nudged him this way. Descalso didn't make an early splash in his career like Bote did, but they have similar profiles and came up at similar ages. Descalso will have made less than 15M at the end of his age 33 season, Bote just got that guaranteed through age 31 with options to potentially double it if he's Descalso quality by that age.

yes it is

really depends on how you're looking at it (if you're talking about the fact that you already had these cheap years locked in and figuring that as lost value or whatever)...but on a pure $/WAR basis, it really isn't.

note that i'm not including the option years.

By doing this deal Bote jumps Almora for guys likely to be sent down at some point. Which the $15 million is worth doing that alone in my eyes, any actual production is gravy. Edited by Cubswin11

Let’s hope. Then he can be traded for pitching cuz McLeod can’t figure out how to develop it.

so far this year, in ~50 games, fangraphs has his production worth $7.6M

Let's assume they don't pick up his option and his biggest payday winds up the $5.5 million in his last year. For reference, Yonder Alonso put up a 0.7 fWAR last year and that was worth 5.8 million according to FG. This was Alonso's line last year:

That's what Bote needs by today's financial standards in order to match what his contract will be worth at its most expensive guaranteed payout. He needs to be marginally acceptable in order to make his most expensive year worth it. And if he fizzles out and craps the bed, big whoop, it's not a ton of money lost. This is a killer contract.
