Bears sign Emanuel Hall as UDFA

I had Hall as the 4th best WR in this draft, mid 2nd round grade (oddly enough, 1 spot ahead of Bears 4th round pick Riley Ridley).

Bears also added Dax Raymond, a 5th round graded TE by most

Also, Guard Alex Bars from Notre Dame, who has injury questions, but was probably a mid-round talent, and gets back with Heistand. These are the most significant of their signings, and among the best in the league.

I’m a Mizzou fan, and had a feeling Hall’s injury history would cause him to drop a bit. I didn’t expect him to go completely undrafted though. The dude can fly and can go up and make a play. If he can stay healthy at all he can be a big time target for Mitchell.

Dusty Baker wrote a guest column about Ryan Pace's propensity for giving away picks to trade up:

https://theathletic.com/952728/2019/04/29/was-trading-up-in-the-draft-worth-it-for-the-bears-were-about-to-find-out/

Not long ago, a boat set out on the Gulf of Mexico. It was a postcard Florida morning just after sunrise.

We were hoping for grouper, snapper or snook, jewels of the sea. But first, we needed bait. We dropped our net in the shallows where small fish were splashing, and hauled in maybe 50 finger mullet. Then we moved to deeper waters and dropped a couple lines.

There, we waited. As we watched the water glisten, felt the sun’s power, drank cold beverages and pondered life’s mysteries, I thought about the difference between using a fishing pole and a net. With a pole, you can catch one fish at a time. With a net, you can catch many. Depending on what you are after, sometimes you are better served with the pole. Sometimes you are better served with the net.

The price was significant. It’s especially significant considering the Bears now have only two picks in the first four rounds next year, after having only two picks in the first four rounds this year.
The last two times he gave up extra picks, he gave them to the Patriots. That is interesting because Bill Belichick’s draft philosophy long has been to acquire more draft capital when possible. Using the net approach appeals to him because he knows a good percentage of the catches are not going to be worth keeping. That goes for whomever is making the picks.
The best teams year-in, year-out usually have waves of young, hungry, low-priced players keeping the veterans on edge, raising the level of intensity in practice and doing the work that others don’t want to do. They are always ready to go, they do as they are told and they sit in the front row of the meeting rooms. Even if they aren’t making big plays every week and even if they never will become All-Pros, they can be the lifeblood of an organization.

And they most frequently are acquired with the kind of draft picks the Bears have been trading away.

Sometimes, a net is more useful than a pole.

That day on the Gulf, we came back to the dock without any grouper, snapper or snook. But we did have a livewell full of finger mullet.

Considering this draft took the majority hit on the Mack & Miller acquisitions, came out a smashing success from what I can tell. Montgomery appears to be a perfect fit in the backfield and to get that value for Ridley and mold that promising young/cheap WR core to grow with Trubisky is ideal.

The UDFA haul is particularly impressive, Raymond I imagine is almost a lock to make the roster at TE and it's particularly confusing that Emmanuel Hall wasn't drafted. Looks like he could win a roster spot over the other newly acquired Hall. Don't know anything about the OL but sounds like a decent chance one makes the roster. Special teams will be significantly improved as long as they land on the right kicker.

Yea looks like Marvin Hall has no guaranteed money so he's definitely on the Hall roster bubble.

Whyte is the interesting one of the draft choices. He has to add serious ST value (even outside of returning) and make a case over a 4th TE/FB or extra S probably to make the roster (absent injuries)

Great overall grades for the Bears draft from many experts. I don't know that they could have gotten better value given the draft choices. A few of the UDFA pickups could have doubled as mid/late round draft picks and gives the Bears a lot of skill position options/battles to make the team. This offense has the potential to be scary good. Let's hope Anthony Miller's shoulder is completely healed and won't be an issue this year. What will drive defenses crazy against the Bears this year is that there isn't that one guy you have to always worry about. Each and every RB/WR/TE are guys of equal talent/ability to make a play, and that's a lot of people to cover play after play, while the Bears have plenty of guys to come in fresh each play. Couple that with Nagy's crazy play book, and I could see a team that scores 30+ this year.

Jesus I'm such a homer.

Mitch came out as slightly anti-deep dish, saying its overrated and preferring thin because you can eat more. Which is true.

also

- Nacho cheese Doritos over cool ranch [FALSE]

- Pizza rolls over bagel bites [TRUE]

- Trubisky prefers his steaks medium: “You’re not allowed to put anything on a steak” [perfectly fine take]

- Water is the best drink in the history of drinks [WEIRD TAKE]

- It’s called “pop” not “soda” [TRUE]

- A hot dog is not a sandwich, it’s a hot dog [true, but this was never a thing I cared about]

- The only thing he puts on his hot dogs is ketchup [perfectly fine take]

I haven't found a decent future draft pick website.

But as far as I can tell the Bears have 2 2nd rounders in 2020, no 1st, 3rd or 4th, and then anywhere from 1 - 3 5ths. 1 - 2 6ths, and 1 7th.

And then 2021 is intact besides this conditional 7th.

They will likely get a pick back for Amos. OTC currently predicting a 4th. Early in the offseason they had a 5th for Callahan too, but someone got pulled from the credits ledger I guess.
