I think the Yankees get a good deal. I don't know if Justus Sheffield is a dominant starter. Say what you want about Paxton, but when he's on, he's been electric for three years. This is a good chance for the Yankees to take. I don't think they stop here - they have money to spend, so I suspect Corbin and Machado could still be in the mix. This deal could fall big time for them, but I think it's a good gamble for them to take considering where they are as an organization right now (primed to try and win now and compete with the Red Sox).

Tbh, the deal looks fine from the Mariners side once they decided they had to move Paxton. Still, Paxton was originally the third of their potential next dominant trio (when do trios actually work out? the Orioles vaunted Arrieta/Tillman/Matusz grouping never did, Isringhausen, Pulsipher, and uh ... Halladay? anyhow, it's all besides the point), behind Walker/Hultzen. I like Sheffield as an elite prospect, but pitching prospects can and obviously do miss.

Wilson

And the Zito/Hudson/Mulder trio worked out pretty well for a while.

Maddux, Glavine & Smoltz.

But that's cheating because they didn't come up as prospects together.

Spahn, Sein, and some other guy.

Too injury prone to lead a rotation.

That’s why they’ll also sign Corbin

Actually think they’ll sign Keuchel

There’s some Erik Bedard potential with Paxton because of the injuries, but he’s a badass rotation arm with the oower arm teams want for the postseason

Sheffield has a high ceiling for a TJ guy, really liked the skills he showed (Ks/limiting Hs and HRs/threw SP innings, power LH), and think he’ll translate well.

Lefties killed Paxton last season, and going to the East and Yankee Stadium won’t do him many favors. Not a bad move, but I like it better for the Mariners just based on control and them not competing next year anyway. Reload for the following year when the Astros running into payroll problems again and rebuilding a rotation.
