I fully expect he'll pick up the option, but if you want to give yourself hope, Kintzler is 34 and every season could be his last where he's employable. If he thinks he can even get the Duensing contract(2/7) from somebody, that might technically be in his best interest. That said he'll likely take the 5 million and bet on himself that he can turn things around to earn another deal.

If applicable Heyward can opt in after 2019 with 550 PA in that season.

Signing Bonus: $20 million (fully deferred at $5M each April 1st from 2024-2027, protected)

If an opt-out is exercised, the signing bonus is paid immediately

Present day contract valued at $179,885,463 due to deferred bonus

Full no trade clause 2016-18

Partial no trade clause 2019-20

Yeah that does sound familiar now. Maybe spotrac thought it was an error and that an opt in made more sense, and so they wrote it that way.

That was an open question at the time it was signed too. There is no reason why Heyward would request this requirement for the opt out, and it doesn't make sense for the Cubs to want it since the only way he's getting less than 550 ABs is if he's hurt or he's not good enough to play every day. I have a feeling that Heyward wanted 2 opt outs, and the Cubs wanted to steer him towards taking the first one, as they knew guys like Harper and Machado would be available this offseason plus expected Jake to leave, Lester to be declining, etc so they wanted payroll flexibility. Also because even before he started to suck at the plate, the skills that made him the most valuable would start to decline towards the back half of the contract.

 

Basically the Cubs were hoping that this 8 year contract would only be 3 years long

I don't think he'll necessarily be the train wreck that he was for the Cubs again next year. For cripes sakes he was an all star in 2017! Lol.

 

Maybe they can trade him this offseason.

He was a garbage pitcher in 2017 (he had a K/9 under 5) and he’s been a garbage pitcher his whole career who has to rely on soft contact and praying to the BABIP Gods to have any kind of success. He horsefeathering sucks.

That profile can go quickly, and signing up for 5 million this year was a risk, but it's disingenuous to say he's been a terrible pitcher getting by on luck. His walk and home rate doubled from anything he had ever done previously, sometimes that happens with relievers, especially those with Kintzler's skills(or lack thereof).

Exactly. He was bad for us, and is obviously not worth $5m, but he's fine. You'd rather spend that same money (and maybe more importantly, that roster spot) on like Jesse Chavez, but spending $5m on a guy who is actually only worth like $3m isn't worth much consternation.
