Blood type is kind of like Japanese astrology, but taken much more seriously. During WW2, Japanese amry units used to be segregated by blood type not because everyone could donate blood to each other or have the correct supply on hand, but because it was believed they would work as units better. They even have laws that you can't ask about blood type before job interviews, and often times the laws are disregarded.

It looks like a power sinker to me. The article claims Darvish has 11 pitches(!) now which is truly insane...

The eephus/slow curveball is probably my favorite Darvish pitch.

I feel like he hits a point of diminishing returns with all those pitches to choose from. If your stuff is elite, you only need 3- 4 is icing. He goes overboard.

Yeah, you would hate to lose a game using your 7th best pitch while trying to fool a batter.

Unless the pitch causes unnecc strain and pressure on the arm, let him be. He was their best pitcher, no need to reboot.

I agree that there is no need to change whatever Darvish is doing, but We Got The Whole 9 is right about diminishing returns and most pitchers not needing that many pitches. There is a school of thought that a pitcher can only command and have a feel for like 3 pitches at a time...

And I've heard many times you never want to get beat on the mound with your 3rd or 4th best pitch that day. Of course, if you have a blister or fastball command issues or lack confidence in a pitch, then it all changes.

He kinda started throwing this new 2-seam/sinker/split/change pitch last year late in the year when he was rolling, iirc. His split use % was at an all time high last year (which I think is what the track man data classifies this new pitch as) and his FB was at a low. Think he’s been working with this pitch for awhile. This was interesting, it shows how Darvish's ZiPS projections have changed over the course of his Cubs tenure: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/darvish-has-whirled-his-way-back-to-the-top/

His outlook for 2021-2023 now is better than it was when he first signed, which is pretty crazy even considering he's drafting off a peak currently.

Thanks for that. I think the more fun article was linked inside yours, which goes over how hard it is to classify Yu's assortment.

More Yu love, this time from the Ringer. Not a ton of new info but still a good read:

Just read it too. horsefeathers the Astros. I had kind of forgotten about that horsefeathers that Gurriel had done. And then 22 batters faced and 0 Ks... for Yu Darvish? And they all just yukked it up as they cheated their way to the title saying he was tipping pitches. Absolute joke of a championship.

Completely agree though I don't think Yu is a Cub if that didn't happen..and that is a scary thought with the rest of our rotation outside of Hendricks.
