I know he's been pretty bad this year, but would the Cubs be interested in Danny Duffy?

I’d hope not. He’s still owed ~$50 million.

Maybe that’s a scenario where the more the Cubs give up, the more KC eats his contract and vice versa.

That would be tough to do, though.

If they don't give up anything, I can't see how they don't go over the luxury tax this season by getting him. I could be wrong about that. Plus, I can't see us wanting to pay $15 million for him next season and in the future with some big contracts already on the books and, hopefully, another big one coming.

On the flipside, I can't see them wanting to give up a bunch of good prospects in order for KC to pay a lot of the money, if KC is even in position to do that.

Or maybe they could take Chatsuck to even the money out a bit.

Regarding J.A, Happ, in the Cubs do end up getting him, would our multi-positional player then become E.N. Happ?

3/46 sounds pretty good for Danny Duffy

They’d have to really believe in something. He’s 72nd of 79 qualifiers for fWAR for SP, 71st in FIP (4.9) 75th in xFIP (5), 73rd in BB/9 (over 4) 48th in K/9 (under 8) so they’d have to feel they could tweak something. His velo is back in line with his career numbers after a dip last year, however.

while Bryant’s injury can be covered with the Cubs’ depth, it does make David Bote, who would likely be recalled from Triple-A if Bryant hit the DL again, more important, despite the fact the Cubs are now getting asked about Bote frequently in trade discussion. With Bryant’s status so unclear, the Cubs might not be willing to part with Bote.

something i saw floating around last night was that the cubs might be pushing more for Stroman than Happ. i can't really imagine why the jays would deal him now with his value at his lowest. but, if they do, is this something people would be into? his walks are up this year, but aside from that, his numbers look pretty in line with his career norms. FIP and xFIP point to some bad luck.

they were talking about this on mully & hanley this morning too. really throws a wrench into any trade plans. but maybe bote's a guy worth keeping around regardless of bryant's health, so it could end up working out for us.

Stroman would be phenomenal, but I really doubt a deal comes together. He's the sort of guy teams seem too scared to deal during the season. He basically had a terrible April, but has been typical Stroman since, so no worries from me on him going forward.

If you think Bote is worth keeping long term fine, but I don't buy the 'have to keep Bote because of Bryants injury questions' logic, especially if it keeps us from our biggest need at the deadline, a starter. Happ, Javy and LaStella can all play 3B if necessary and while options like LaStella might not be that great defensively at 3B, the downgrade is IMO not more than the potential upgrade of a starter who can pencil into the Cubs postseason rotation. Position player depth is our biggest strength right now, and that depth doesn't even include Bote full time right now.

He’s coming back from injury soon and if KBs injury is not going to get better this year I’d be interested in Donaldson.

That could actually be a sneaky awesome way of upgrading the rotation this year. An impact guy like Stroman probably costs someone off the ML roster, let's just say Happ or Almora. Our FO is reticent to do that during the year, but if you expand the deal to Donaldson and Stroman. pushing KB to the OF if/when both are healthy, you can trade one of those guys without hurting our position player depth.

I'm not sure the BJs would want to package Donaldson and Stroman when there's a market for them seperately.

Idk if there’s all the great of a market for an injured Donaldson right now. Especially when there’s Beltrr, Moustakas, Frazier, Dozier, Cabrera and others out there. I like gambling Donaldson regains form but he’s been hurt/bad all year, he shouldn’t cost much.

My totally made up guess at what Theo does.

That'a a whole lotta money unless Texas is picking up a gigantic amount.

Yeah that would put us in the LT this year for sure and next year I’m pretty sure

Maldonado to Astros, I wouldn’t have minded him for our back up as an upgrade and also to make Victor tradeable (if someone liked him)

Trade for Scherzer

I’d take the dive and jump in on him. He’s signed for 3 years after this and he has deferrals so idk exactly how much he’s owed but I think it’s in the $120 million range
