I'm surprised.

If you want to craft a narrative, Bosio made the org look bad with the accusations he made about Molina and especially Thames early in the season. Theo did mention organizational issues related to the number of walks given up, so maybe Bosio wasn't on the same page. Contreras being a newer catcher and calling so many games seems like a significant factor though. That alone doesn't strike me as 'get rid of him' material, and maybe there's a bit of a Renteria-esque scenario with Maddon's former pitching coach now on the market, but probably more to it than we can publicly deduce.

Not a fan of this move at all and seems like a knee jerk reaction to the October pen issues.

it's a knee jerk reaction to the fact that maddon's buddy jim hickey is no longer the rays' pitching coach.

Wow. In Theo we trust but I have a hard time justifying this call. I get the reasons that have been mentioned but the dude was the pitching coach when Jeff Samardzija turned from a fringe pen arm into a player valuable enough to make the All Star team and be traded for a top 5 prospect, when Jake Arrieta found a way to turn his great stuff into a Cy Young winner, and a fringe prospect that throws 90 mph into a reasonable facimile of Greg Maddux.

I definitely think the Molina/Thames things was a factor but by far not the deciding reasoning.

Everyone who wanted the hitting coach to take the fall:

Definitely a little strange. I don't like it. But I also don't know if I should care.

I thought Bosio was a great pitching coach. But, then again, all of our pitchers started throwing 4 mph slower this year and we walked like 7 per 9 innings. So what the hell does he know?

I'm honestly not sure how much affect hitting and pitching coaches have. I think having good organizational approaches is important. And it's obviously better to have a pitching coach who is more knowledgeable. But all of that work is done behind the scenes, so it's hard for us to know exactly how significant a coach's impact is. You can look at results, but that's a fool's errand.

So I'm not a huge fan of this move, but I'm not going to get too worked up about it.

Refresh mu memory: what did Bisio say about molina?

He carried on about how the ball sticking to his chest protector was cheating, and also suggested the fix was in with the signs behind home plate (recall Baez losing a ground ball in them)

holy crap

i had a suspicion this might happen when theo was on the score a few days ago (not the post mortem presser) talking about how our pitching approach would probably have to fundamentally change in terms of throwing so many chase pitches (or something along those lines). it seemed like a broad stroke type of statement and not just about the last few games.

then on top of that there was the whole thing with the suspensions

I always looked forward to his candor in the weekly interviews on the Score.

really? i'd always cringe when i'd happen to hear those. they were so bad and he didn't really say anything. just a grumpy dude who sounded like he didn't even want to be awake yet.

don't know if it's a good move or not or if it'll change anything, but the walking too many dudes thing was a season long issue
