Kintzler is a bum, imo. I’d rather go after someone with actual good stuff even if they aren’t a “closer”

Not a fan of Kintzler, but I don't think he'd be signed to be the closer.

I keep hearing "if Wade Davis moves on"...I guess I just thought at this point that was kinda assumed like it is with Arrieta. Am I wrong?

I think there’s a chance we still bring him back, I thought I saw we were planning on meeting with him/his agent this week at the meetings. If that Melancon level deal never materializes for him and he can be had for 2 years at a high aav (2/30 with an option for like $15 mil/buyout for $3-5 and it vests with a IP threshold) or 3 years around $40 million I assume we’d be in on bringing him back.

What’s the situation with Trevor Rosenthal and would he be worth trying to stash this offseason?

He had to have TJS or some sort of surgery and I think he’s going to be out for the entire year. Hard pass for me, if we are going to do the 2 year sign and stash thing for a guy Pineda would be my target since it’s possible he’s a rotation option 2nd half this coming year and certainly ready for a rotation spot come 2019.

Hoping someone else scoops up Kintzler soon; really not interested in him for the Cubs. I'd rather they go after Joe Smith than him, and would say McGee would be tops on my wish list.

Rosenthal should be ready in August or thereabouts. He's a pretty solid option when Matheny isn't in charge of a pen and pitching the exact same guys every day.

I wonder what Zach Britton would cost in terms of players? If signing Cobb is as inevitable as it sounds, then we've filled three of our other pitching holes with multi-year FA deals. That's not a problem per se, but Britton being a rental would be more feature than bug at that point. And since we won't have spent player capital anywhere else I'd be more likely to reach for a luxury item such as Britton.

I certainly wouldn't give up Happ for him, but I'd be willing to most our prospects.

Submariner Makita was posted yesterday so he’ll be another option. I’d be very interested to bring him in on a 2 year plus an option contract since I don’t imagine the posting fee will be too high.

I’d still like to bring in Reed. There was some discussion that it was viewed that Morrow set the market for non Closers. If there’s a way to bring in Addison Reed for less than Morrow, that’s a nice security blanket in case Morrow has any issues/setbacks.

That is my biggest off-season fear. Morrow is going to go Justin Wilson on us.

Little bit of apples to oranges...Wilson has thrown at least 58 innings each of the last five years, his effectiveness just disappeared down the stretch for us. There's no reason to believe Morrow won't be effective when healthy, but keeping him healthy is a huge question mark. If I had to bet on 2018 WAR/WPA between those two, I'd pick Wilson.

Of course, if we're relying on either of them to get into October, we've got bigger issues. Right now we're projected to win the division by 7 games, and that's with Chatwood and Monty as the 4 and 5 starters, and Strop as our fourth best reliever. Obviously this is based on the more primitive projection systems at this point. To Maddux's point above, load up on relievers on relatively cheap/short term deals, see what ends up sticking early in the year rather than having to pay a huge premium come July to lock in your October bullpen.

Patrick Corbin is apparently available, depending on cost (if it's more of a salary dump, since they are rumored to want to cut, he made $4 mil in arbitration last year) he would be someone I'd have interest in to try and turn in to a Andrew Miller bullpen type. He's a perfectly fine back of the rotation guy too but there could be some elite upside in him as a bullpen option. 92.5 MPH avg on the FB last year (figure out of the pen that gets to 94-96) and he had the 9th best wSL, 18th best wSL/C of all SP last year. So again with a move to the bullpen that already elite pitch may be more elite. Just a thought.

The Cardinals are pretty linked to Colome right now. I wonder what’s Davis’s market is with these recent signings? Seems to be drying up. Twins maybe? But they are in on bringing Kintzler back too.

it's gonna be kintzler for us isn't it?

Well, he was linked to a team, then they overpaid on Tommy Hunter.

No, I just haven’t heard him connected to the Cubs in the last couple days. A Reed + Morrow offseason for the bullpen would be excellent.
