Every team that has tried to get cute with their rotation in the playoffs so far has suffered as a result. The Indians didn't discover a new market inefficiency last year, they just rode an incredible string of fortunate pitching until they ran out of gas midway through the World Series.

So far this year:

- The Yankees went with Severino with the plan to go bullpen game at the first sign of trouble, and Severino got a single out.

- The Astros went with Verlander in relief with runners on up 2-1 in the series and Verlander promptly relinquished the lead.

- The Red Sox went with Sale in relief and couldn't make it work.

- The Indians decided to hole Kluber to Game 2 and pitch Bauer on short rest in Game 4, and got no success from either plan.

- The Diamondbacks decided to piggy back starters for the WC game and Game 1, and they're basically out of pitching midway through game 3 and are about to get swept.

The Dodgers, Cubs and Nationals have basically gone business as usual with the 1-4 starters, and they're both the most well rested staffs, and have pitched the best.

Did the Yankees really get cute in the Wild Card game? Severino got lit up right away and Girardi didn't want to let it get out of hand. Sure, Severino could have recovered and gone 6 innings allowing 3 or 4 runs. But if Girardi leaves Severino in and he gives up more runs and they lose, Girardi gets torched in the media. He knew he had a stud pen and they did exactly what he hoped they would (8 2/3, 5 H, 1 R).

I'd also argue that the Sale thing worked for a while since he got 4 scoreless innings. Maybe Farrell just left him in too long (I can't speak for how he looked in his fifth inning since I wasn't watching).

The other three, though, I 100% agree with you.

Aaron Judge has 14 strikeouts this series. It's the most ever in a postseason series. So he's got more strikeouts through 4 1/2 games than anyone has ever had in 7 games.

He's up to 16Ks now which is more than Tony Gwynn had in 577 PAs in the 1995 season.

i bet indians fans all over the world are trying hard to convince themselves that a 22 game winning streak is better than a world series

No I think they’re sharpening their knives for Terry Francona.

He’s a great coach, but pitching Bauer on short rest may have been a firable offense.
