Sometimes it makes sense to go on short rest. Like last year when the Dodgers pitched Kershaw on short rest because all of their other pitchers were dead.

But Cleveland? With their starting pitching depth? They could have used Tomlin, Clevenger or

Salazar. All of whom are going to pitch this game anyway. This made no sense.

None of this made sense. Kluber should've started Game 1 so he'd be on normal rest if Game 5 was necessary. Not sure why you'd start Carrasco in Game 3 over Game 2 - he could've been available in a potential Game 5. There's no point in having Bauer come on short rest when you're still up 2-1. Yeesh.

The other AL managers have been bad too. Why bring Verlander out of the pen when you're up 2-1? Why not start Sale if he's available in middle relief? And Girardi in Game 2? Enough said.

Small critique, since you are usually non-critiquable. Kluber is on normal rest for Game 5. Starting Game 1 gives him an extra day, starting Game 2 has him on regular rest. So really this horsefeathers up is on Francona in not keeping 1 of of Bauer/Salazar/Carrasco available on full or more rest for a Game 5 bullpen chance. Since he burned Bauer (or Game 1/2 starter) on short rest tonight, burned whoever started Game 3 (Carrasco), and now using Salazar.

Should’ve just started Tomlin and burned him to preserve the bullpen for max options for Game 5. If u get to the point of having a lead in the 5/6th inning then go to the horses. But until then don’t double horsefeathers your self tonight and Game 5.

Oof, my bad on that. You're right.

It might not matter, since they could win Game 5, but what he did tonight has pretty large residual effects in terms of tilting that favor by a little bit in what’s a 55/45 at best game in Cleveland’s favor to begin with in Game 5 at full health.

And almost all of it was self inflicted and unnecessary

I didn't get the exact numbers because I was flipping between the Bears game, but they just put up Indians stats and record in potential clinch games since '97 and woof not great Bob.

Every team that has tried to get cute with their rotation in the playoffs so far has suffered as a result. The Indians didn't discover a new market inefficiency last year, they just rode an incredible string of fortunate pitching until they ran out of gas midway through the World Series.

So far this year:

- The Yankees went with Severino with the plan to go bullpen game at the first sign of trouble, and Severino got a single out.

- The Astros went with Verlander in relief with runners on up 2-1 in the series and Verlander promptly relinquished the lead.

- The Red Sox went with Sale in relief and couldn't make it work.

- The Indians decided to hole Kluber to Game 2 and pitch Bauer on short rest in Game 4, and got no success from either plan.

- The Diamondbacks decided to piggy back starters for the WC game and Game 1, and they're basically out of pitching midway through game 3 and are about to get swept.

The Dodgers, Cubs and Nationals have basically gone business as usual with the 1-4 starters, and they're both the most well rested staffs, and have pitched the best.
