this is weird, although he was decent just last year and hasn't played that much this year

He was solid last year and really benefitted from the new ball if you believe in it.

If he's controlled through next year I guess he's Jays replacement? Or else maybe Almora was suppose to go in a Verlander trade and this was his replacement?

He's making 4.850 this year and is 3rd year Arb eligible next year. Granted, he's not even on the 40 man, so we'd have to offer him arb next year to keep his rights, I guess. Unless we got him to re-sign cheaper.

Precursor to Almora in a JV off season deal?

Martin makes 4.85 million this year and is Arb 3 next year.

Kinda odd, he is a good defender in CF and left handed, but the bat has been so bad that it's difficult to see him as anything but a pinch runner/defensive replacement down the stretch. Is there room on a playoff roster for that guy when Happ, Jay, and Almora all exist?

This seems like much more of a move for next year than this year, imo. Sure he'll maybe be up for defense the rest of the year but doubt he gets many, if any, starts.

Smart move. You never know how things will shake out. If he makes one play in the outfield to save runs against the Brewers or Cardinals, or steals one base in a big spot, it could help us win the division. Most likely ends up as a nothing move, but you never know. Also could be an insurance policy in case of an injury in the outfield. I can't see any way he makes it onto the playoff roster right now. But, if someone goes down, he could fill Almora's role of last year of only playing defense and pinch running for our Large Adult Son. Right now Almora is going to fill that role as well as being a lefty masher. But if someone gets hurt, you could shuffle roles around and find value in him being on the roster.

This has to be a trade for next year right? He requires a 40 man spot if he is added this year and I don't know where he would play.

seems odd to make a move for next year at the playoff roster deadline. not that it couldn't be.

but we have a month to figure out if he has a place on the playoff roster.

thats what a verlander trade would have been largely about if it happened. Every move they've made this season has been as much about 2018 as 2017.

Yeah true. Just seems like there were enough other options available in house.

That said, Hoyer just said they got Martin because Maddon asked for a defensive outfielder/base stealer.

well, sure, largely (even though it still has pretty considerable significance for the 2017 playoff run), but that's more because the tigers were working on the august 30th clock with other teams.

i don't think people were knocking down the door on martin. i'm pretty sure the cubs got him in case a need arises for an OF or he somehow otherwise plays his way into a playoff role as a baserunning (not good this year)/defense guy.
