as someone who is far from an expert in nfl contract issues/salary cap stuff, is there some reason the bears would be cutting fuller? or is it just an issue of not thinking he's good enough to be on the roster?

they don't think he's worth what he's owed in the final year of his contract. They've questioned his commitment coming back from injury and basically are just looking for an opportunity to cut him.

Able players are cut all the time if they either don't fit a system or rub coaches the wrong way.

yeah, that's basically what i was asking...if it's a performance thing or just a guy the coaches don't like

did you guys catch the hicks interview during the game? it sounded like he was campaigning for mitch to be the starter.

he talked about how exciting it was and said something along the lines of how you really hope to see him play in the regular season with better players

edit - here's a quote from arkush's article

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2017/08/11/hub-arkush-chicago-bears-first-team-offense-stumbles-in-preseason-opener/acnrbgp/

Judging by Thursday, his career might do the same.

“I tell you what, the stuff he’s doing on the field right now is something that you hopefully look forward to seeing in the regular season and against better competition,” defensive end Akiem Hicks said. “He looks really good right now.”

It's a combo of things. Talent and fit, certainly.

From a cap standpoint, when would come time to keep Fuller next spring, he'll be an UFA. His competition are guys like Callahan and LeBlanc who will likely qualify as RFA (2018, 2019 respectively). Based on the output and current development track of the competing young guys, they are disincentives from putting that development into a first rounder entering his final year (all else being equal). So there is some control consideration.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000828546/article/mitchell-trubisky-turns-heads-across-nfl-with-fine-bears-debut

Teammates love Trubisky. They respect how he works. He carries himself with a quiet confidence. His athletic ability and accuracy make him a perfect fit for the bootlegs and action passing game in their offense. Trubisky makes, as general manager Ryan Pace told me before kickoff, "consistent 'wow' throws" in practice." The NFL game didn't look too big for him Thursday -- "and it's not," one Bears coach told me afterward. "He's going to be really good."

They're not alone. If I get unprompted texts from people with other NFL teams about something, I usually take that as a sign it's resonating within the league. It happened with Dak Prescott last year. It happened again Thursday. One NFL scout who watched Trubisky's debut live said he'd like to see him get some snaps with the starters next time out: "He looks like he's in control."

Some of Trubisky's completions (including the touchdown strike to a wide-open Victor Cruz) were easy. But others, such as a deep crossing route and a dart to Deonte Thompson just before Trubisky got creamed on third-and-18, were NFL stuff -- a reminder Trubisky's accuracy was a primary reason he was the consensus No. 1 QB in the draft among scouts I spoke to.

I think approximately half of the people saying/writing trubinsky are doing so ironically at this point, considering how much play the mispronunciation thing has gotten.

QB Mitch Trubisky, 85.1 overall grade

If the rookie quarterback continues to play like he did on Thursday night, he’s going to make it much more difficult for the Bears’ front office and coach staff to stick to their plan of having him sit as a rookie. Although it was just one half of a preseason game against backups, he still played well when many rookie quarterbacks struggle in the preseason. When accounting for batted passes. drops, throwaways, and spikes, Trubisky’s adjusted completion percentage was 90.9 percent.

DI Jonathan Bullard, 78.0 overall grade

Bullard was a disruptive force on the line of scrimmage for the Bears’ defense. He had two stops in the run game and provided one quarterback pressure on his 13 pass-rush snaps. .

You know those fans who read way too much into preseason stats? Don't be that guy

you know that guy who hates fun and tries to keep other people from having it? don't be that guy

if someone is dumb enough to not understand the lens through which you'd look at how trubisky played last night, that's on them. nobody is putting him in the hall of fame or even the starting role yet and the talk about the game doesn't need to be qualified that way.

Again, presenting a boring trope as a profound idea.

There's a difference between watching and going "hey, that was fun" and "let me post every article and graphic about it". Your'e just setting yourself up for disappointment

haven't chimed in (nobody noticed or cared, I'm sure) but yes, mitchell is going to be good i believe.

being an nc state fan (glennon's alum) and having a completely rational and supreme hatred of unc, i'd like to see glennon to do well. and honestly i think he can be a (maybe slightly?) above average starter. BUT, trubisky is the real deal i think. i've watched him play a lot in college and his accuracy is off the charts (especially deep down the field). he was the clear top QB prospect in this draft to me and i wish him no ill will now that he's not wearing baby blue anymore. i'll root for him and hope the bears do well and begin to turn it around. i was most happy about him leaving unc a year early, to be honest.

if any of you lived in NC and were not UNC fans, you'd know exactly what i'm talking about. they are basically like cowboy fans and most are totally and completely arrogant and obnoxious. and it doesn't help that you can't swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting like 4 UNC fans.

Only 3 throws over 15 yards?

Let's get excited for the next Alex Smith guys!

Efficient guy, who doesn't turn the ball over and has won 60 of his last 85 starts.....now give him a better arm and more bulk with similar (at worst) athletic ability. I'll take it.

Trubisky is much more Russell Wilson than Alex Smith.

Well thanks for protecting me from that.

Pretty sure nobody is forcing you to read any of it. Sorry for posting Bears content in the Bears thread though.

As the guy who loathed the general thought about of even taking Trubisky.....

How can ANYONE not be stoked by that? One preseason game? Yeah, so? It went about as well(hell, better) than damn near anyone's wildest expectations. The guy looks the part. Its OK to say that. He's got lots of work to do obviously. But, I don't care if its one game, against backups....Still much easier to see this panning out. He's got the tools. It isn't about this year. But, he's going to get plenty of time under center in 2017. Forget numbers, the eye test alone.....He stood out. I couldn't be happier to have been so wrong.

Pace saved his job with this draft. Cohen is going to be fun. Shaheen will be a force soon and Jackson is going to be a starter....And we got a franchise QB.

Maybe they don't win but 4-5 games in 2017.....But, this team is going to be fun to watch.
