Lange 8K/4BB/2hits over 7.1. Walked in a run in the 3rd, that was it, and was apparently cruising down the stretch, I believe got last 8 guys and 12 of last 13. Kendall Rogers said he K'd the last guy in the 7th with a 93 mph fastball.

Against what is probably the best college baseball team in history. Good to see.

Better than the AA caliber talent he faced in the SEC?

Kinda shocked we didn't sign anyone to underslot deals, what a weird year to shy away from that strategy with the extra first round pick.

This might be why:

Seth: Do you think flatter slot values have reduced the amount of underslot/overslot pick combinations? Any picks today with significant signability questions?

Eric A Longenhagen: I do, or at least it makes it harder to target specific players later on and necessitates the teams take a more significant under slot haircuts.

Connecting a few dots, although it could be coincidental obviously....Clarke Schmidt just signed with the Yankees for 2,184,300. Our EXACT slot at pick 30.

Hadn't seen these before now.

285. CHC - Chris Carrier, OF, Memphis

$5,000 (Pick value: $137,500)

315. CHC - Brian Glowicki, RHP, Minnesota

$5,000 (Pick value: $131,300)

Starting assignment: TBD

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/237042574/2017-draft-signing-and-bonus-tracker/?topicid=151437456

That's a savings of $258,000 to go with the $173,300 underslot from Little and the overage bonus of $372,745 for a total of $804,845 for the Cubs to play with.

Top 10 picks yet unsigned:

1a. RHP Alex Lange ($2,184,300 slot) - BA ranked 34th

5. OF Nelson Velasquez ($285,800 slot) - BA ranked 202nd

6. RHP Jeremiah Estrada ($222,600 slot) - BA ranked 121st

For those that don't want to do the math, that leaves $3,497,545 to signs 3 guys and possibly some overslots in rounds 11-16.

If it's not coincidental, what would those dots lead to?

My Sherlock skills tells me it ain't no coinkydink.

Right, but what do you think it means? That he had a deal in place with the Cubs and the Yankees swooped in?

Yeah, that's my guess.

Or that Schmidt insisted on 'first round money' and that's the lowest number that qualifies.

Technically, last pick in the 1st round this year was #27. He got slot for the 30th pick which was the Cubs compensation pick, but if you go by 30 teams in the league, then the 30th pick slot fits that logic.

4 days rest is still short rest in college baseball.

And let's not act as though he would care about a pitch count for Lange in the deciding game of the CWS. If he's pitching well in the 7th but is at 110 pitches and only has a 1 run lead, he's staying in there. I am hoping for an LSU sweep so Lange doesn't pitch and so UF loses.

Hmm, kind of thought we may get a slight discount on him.

Also, when he was drafted, I thought his name was Erlich a la Erlich Bachman. It was pretty disappointing to find out it's not but I think I'm still going to call him Erlich.

That's such a weird coincidence -- I kid you not, but for some reason in my mind I also thought his name was Erlich, like Erlich Bachman from "Silicon Valley". I don't know why I thought that or think that sounds better in my head, but it's disappointing that his name is just Erich.

Also, who the hell names their kid Eric and then decides to spell it E-R-I-C-H? I've never met an Erich, but I know so many Erics.

How much longer do you guys think we'll have to wait before A. Lange signs? Not a big deal. We're not going to push him and have him throw this summer.

I feel like the Cubs could push him pretty fast next year and maybe start him at High-A. That curveball is pretty sick when he can command it.

He should be on a pretty similar plan/trajectory to whatever Hatch did for a little bit after signing last year then starting this year I'd think. Maybe not, prospects guys is that not the case?

Hatch was shut down for the regular season after signing, pitches sparingly in instructs and debuted this year in high-A. I think that's exactly what the Cubs will do with Lange (with an outside chance he'll start at A-ball or even AA).

Yeah, no way he pitches again this summer. I'd figure him for A+ next spring, assuming he looks healthy and OK in camp.

Per CCDT, 11th rounder RHP Rollie Lacy and 12th rounder RHP Ben Hecht have officially signed for $125,000 each. They're both college juniors but in name only as Hecht is 22 and Lacy is just 2 weeks away from turning 22. Lacy was the Friday night starter for Creighton while Hecht was a reliever for Wichita State.

Here's a bit on Lacy:

“I’m a ground-ball pitcher,” Lacy said in a recent interview with The World-Herald. “Even though these guys are new, I still have the same amount of confidence as I’ve had. ... I’m always as good as the guys are behind me.”

He’s off to a great start.

Through his first four outings, Lacy’s recorded a 2.59 ERA in 24-1/3 innings as the Jays’ ace. He’s surrendered a little more than one hit per inning, but his 9.33 strikeout-to-walk rate ranks 21st nationally.

What’s been most intriguing so far is — despite Lacy’s pitch-to-contact preference — he’s striking out more batters than ever. He averaged 5.7 strikeouts per nine innings during his first two CU seasons. He’s at 10.4 this year.

It’s still early, of course. Pitchers often have the advantage before the weather warms up for good.

But Lacy did spend the winter working on regaining consistency with his slider. He’s always had deceptive, late movement on his fastball (he can comfortably throw a four-seamer and two-seamer).

Rollie Lacy is a right-handed pitcher out of Creighton University in Omaha. He graduated from Holy Family High School where, as a senior, he posted a 0.00 ERA in 34 innings. He is now a red-shirt junior. He has been the team’s Friday night starting pitcher since his sophomore season. At 6-4 and 195 pounds, Lacy typically will sit 89-91 mph. He has a lot of sink and also throws a slurve. This year, he went 5-2 with a 2.54 ERA. In 88.2 innings, he struck out 83 and walked just 18. He’ll likely be an early Day 3 guy because he doesn’t have a ton of velocity, but he is one who could go through the lower levels fairly quickly.

This is an excerpt from an article about Ben Hecht linked at CCDT:

...in the 12th round with the 375th pick, the Chicago Cubs reached out and took the Wichita State reliever with a 96-mile per hour fastball and a power curveball.

He signed with Chicago and reported to Mesa, Arizona for rookie ball Monday. Pretty shortly after the draft, Hecht ditched his allegiances to his previously favorite team the St. Louis Cardinals.

“That was probably the biggest news after it all happened was everyone was kind of looking around like, 'Wasn't he a Cardinal fan?' 'Well yeah, he was,' ” Hecht said.
