that was a nice half inning

Yeah, ground balls are good. He should try to get more of them.

*Crap, I forgot about the powers*

Actually ground balls are bad. He should continue to do that.

If your stuff doesn't dance enough to strike out AAA hitters, then MLB hitters are going to have more success at punishing it when you inevitably aren't flawless with location. Butler is the same guy he was prior to 2017.

Agreed. The warning signs were all there in Iowa. Hopefully when Hendricks returns, Montgomery stays in the rotation.

Butler seems pretty ... fine for a 5th starter? I'm more concerned about getting shutout again

This guy is pitching really well, but does he really deserve to get every close call on every side of the plate? I may have to stop watching baseball on tv until we get robot umps... at least over the radio I don't get as frustrated.

There's nothing wrong with either Butler or Montgomery as a 5th starter. The problem is we need a front line guy to go with whichever one ends up in the rotation.

There's probably some truth to this, but he's averaging a shade under 5 IP per start(meaning he's basically never seeing a lineup for the 3rd time) and he's got a 4 ERA with peripherals slightly worse than that. Doesn't seem like he's setting much of a bar that any number of pitchers couldn't reach.

In defense of the Duke, this has less to do with his powers and more to do with the fact that the Cubs just aren't very good.

the cubs are good. they just aren't playing well.

Butler has had games of 3, 4.1, 5, 5, 5.2, and 6 innings pitched at this point.....Its not great, its not awful. Its too soon to declare anything. 2 good or 2 bad starts in a row at this stage can still skew things a ton. Hell, one will. He passes the eye test, he's got good stuff. I don't think we can conclude anything yet on him at all.
