Point is, if Happ were to stay up, they'd want him playing every day. Almora, Schwarber, and Heyward would also need regular playing time. Sending down LaStella just sends down a guy you don't have to worry about getting reps. Sending down Almora leaves Heyward as the regular CF(or Jay, which defeats the purpose of getting all those guys regular time in the OF)

Schwarber seems like a very real possibility.

Can't tell if you're serious or not, so don't mind this if you're not

Theo could barely physically contain how badly he wanted to scoff at a reporter who asked whether they'd thought about that like two days ago and mentioned how badly he'd been destroying balls lately and how good his PAs have been. Maddon has been saying the same stuff and all he did since was crush more balls in the past few days.

And amble around the OF like a wounded alpaca.

considering theo practically laughed at a reporter who asked whether it was possible he'd be sent down literally two days ago, yeah, i don't think it seems like a very real possibility. and i don't think they were expecting him to be any better an OFer than he has been.

Getting rid of the 8th reliever and having 4 outfielders for 3 spots isn't really an untenable situation. Especially when Almora can get plenty of run as a defensive replacement and is a guaranteed start against LHP. They can also just ride Happ's hot streak and if he hits a cold spell just ship him back to Iowa. Or someone else needs a DL stint or just gets a multi-day knock. Or they make an early trade and one or both of Almora and Happ are gone.

In other words, we don't need to apply permanence to a situation that is 100% guaranteed not to have it. 20 days ago we all would've laughed at the suggestion that we'd be having a conversation about how to make room for Happ, in another 20 days he might be hitting .190 or Heyward might have bonitis or Almora might be in the American League.

As much as I love him, I was thinking Javy could have been sent down, prior to today. But, with Addy struggling, and the total lack of another guy capable of playing SS, I doubt it was on the table.

At any rate, with Zobrists back, Addy's shoulder(and struggles), plus days off for others and typical replacements in-game, I think Joe can find plenty of AB's to go around for a while, until things sort themselves out better.

10 game sample of starts....After that, maybe its solved on its own.

C Contreras-7 Montero-3

1B Rizzo-9 KB-1

2B Javy-5 Zobrist-4 Happ-1

SS Addy-8 Javy-2

3B KB-8 Happ-1 Javy-1

LF Schwarber-8 Happ-2

CF Almora-3 Heyward-3 Happ-3 Jay-1

RF Heyward-5 Zobrist-3 Happ-1 Almora-1

Total Starts

Contreras-7

Montero-3

Rizzo-9

Javy-8

Zobrist-7

Happ-8

Addy-8

KB-9

Schwarber-8

Almora-4

Heyward-8

Jay-1

Plus, defensive replacements, pinch hitting.....At any rate, there's AB's to go around, and I doubt anyone cares if Jay doesn't play much for the time being.....

We could just send Happ back to the minors, where he had a .733 OPS in AA last year. It's not like he's going Trout right now. He looks kinda shaky in the outfield himself. He's made contact on like 55% of his swings, and one of his home runs was a fly out on any other night of the year. He's played well and is hot, but some more seasoning might suit him well.

Yes, that was my point. And i think it's valid. As much as I'd hate to see lastella get meaningful PAs, you always one of Happ, Jay, Baez, Zobrist, Heyward on the bench along with Miggy and Lastella.

I know this is well covered territory, but I never get sick about reading arguments about getting everyone enough playing time because we have too many good players.

I love it. I don't love that Almora has been relegated to a bench role though. I'd rather he be getting reps in Iowa.

It is nice that we've gone from Szczur and LaStella to Almora and Javy. nice improvement.

He also looks completely fine at both 2B and CF. He's made me a firm believer.

Same here. And I've never been high on him. And then that Statcast data came out that showed he was astonishingly fast. I can buy him as a decent defender up the middle, and not as the plodding corner outfielder I envisioned. He's a beacon in a sea of horsefeathers.

Playing at a 4 WAR pace and his K rate (thanks to the bad stretch a month or so ago) is still sitting at 30 percent. Imagine if he could pull a KB and get that to 20 percent next year...
