Could've just signed Cain for a quarter of that and won the division by almost 10 games last season

That Cain contract is going to age incredibly poorly for the Brewers. He’s 33 and he’s got three more years and $51M left after this year.

adam jones sucks though. not as bad as those 2 idiots, but he still sucks.

Even if the Cubs got 2018 Adam Jones OPSing .732 and playing a bad right field, he’d be pretty easily worth the $3M the D-Backs are paying him just to get Almora’s bat out of the lineup.

He's going to have to fall off of a steep cliff (possibly literally) really fast for this to turn out to have been a bad signing for them.

People do this all the time: they love to point out that the back end of a contract could be ugly but completely gloss over the fact that they're possibly going to get surplus value on the deal by year 3. Last year he was 6.9 bWAR and 5.7 fWAR and this year he's added another 1 to each of them in the first 6th of the season, so he's well on pace to do that again. That will cover the 80m contract and then some if he gets to 12 WAR. Who gives a crap about what happens thereafter.

Yeah, they're getting what the Cubs were desperately hoping they would get out of Darvish's deal. It really doesn't mater if he sucks the last year (or even the last couple years) of the deal with the pace he's playing.

Surely Ian Happ could be OPSing more than .480.

He doesn’t make a cool diving catch once every 2 weeks that is largely needed because he’s so slow, though

I realize this is the crap on Almora thread, but metrics say you're completely wrong about this. He had the 2nd biggest gap between expected catch % and actual catch % last time I looked and the only guy ahead of him was Kiermayer.

Out of curiosity, because I can't find the exact metric you're referring to, are you talking about the 108 innings he's played this year or the 918 innings he played last year?

And, yeah, I assumed Cain would break down and it would be a normal surplus value early/overpay later-type deal. But, at this point, they could pay him that salary through 2035 and he'd be worth it.

.910 OPS, .380 wOBA, 136 wRC+

Are they playing well? If they are playing well right now, then they are good right now. I don't pretend to have the ability to prognosticate the future

Stay mad, I guess? If you're convinced that a player who is playing well is actually bad (at this moment), I don't know what to tell you. I'm not saying Adam Jones (or Heyward or whoever) will continue to be good the rest of the year, I'm only saying that in the small sample size that is the 2019 season, they have been good.

i thought you were trolling. i think it goes without saying that we're talking about more than a 3 week sample when we talk about whether or not a player is "good". i said that he is better than almora/happ, while pointing out that there is a valid reason why he didn't get a good contract in the offseason. he's a 33 year old outfielder who was worth .6 war last season and 1.7 the year before.

i don't know why you would take issue with me pointing out that he is likely a bad player going forward, and then shrug and pretend like you don't understand the problem with evaluating a player based on less than a month of games.

Guys, Matthew Boyd is the best pitcher in baseball. If you're convinced that a player who has been the best pitcher in baseball is actually not the best pitcher in baseball, I don't know what to tell you.

What in the seven hells are you on about now?

I just remembered we have that Johnny Field guy in Iowa, checked his stats... he’s hitting .269/.316/.615, .373 wOBA, 114 wRC+, 2 Dongs, 6 doubles and 3 triples, 7% BB rate and 24% K rate, he had a 101 wRC+ vs LHP in mlb last year. Get his ass up here for Almora

Albert Almora is bad in a way that a Jim Hendry guy would be bad. He swings at everything, grounds out, and sucks.

except he was drafted by Epstein.
