Explain yourself.

saying that you have no interest in winning the division if they only win like 85 games is dumb and you know that you don't actually feel that way. it's like at the beginning of the season when david was saying that if the cubs didn't get off to a scorching start, that he didn't care about their record being good at all. you're trying too hard.

You're responding to something that nobody said. I just said I too want them to win the division. Meaning I want them to win the division. But the fact remains that if we can't win a crappy division then it goes down as an embarrassing season considering the talent we have compared to the others.

And in that case, why would I feel disappointed? I'd feel annoyed and embarrassed.

it was obviously the sentiment of what you said. what is your end game here?

Let me make this more clear.

I want the Cubs to win the division. If they can win the division with 82 wins, I'll take it. I'll be bored, but I'll take it.

If the Cubs don't win the division, they will have been beaten out by a legitimately bad team. Therefore, I won't be sitting there disappointed. I'll be sitting there going, "wow, that's totally embarrassing that we sucked that bad."

The only way we lose the division is if we suck. The Cubs hold all the cards. I'm not going to worry about what the other teams do because if we take care of business, it doesn't matter. And if we don't, then screw us.

I had some outlandish expectations for this team. And it's been incredibly frustrating what's happened. As such, I've had to re-calibrate my expectations as this season has went on. It hasn't made it any less frustrating after coming to terms with what's happened. But, hell yes I'd be disappointed if they don't win the division.

I'd be perfectly fine with an 85-win division champion. Just get me some October baseball, even if it's by default.

That's cool. We will all have different emotions. You will be disappointed. I'll be annoyed and embarrassed. Either way, we both will be wondering why the Cubs sucked so bad when they shouldn't have.

yeah, this is all dumb wankery, and you know it is. if the cubs need their 83rd win to seal the division in game 162, i'm sure you won't be disappointed in a loss

In a scenario where it comes down to the final game and we lose and squander a playoff spot, sure, I'll have feelings of disappointment to go with the annoyance and embarrassment.

I swear to you I'm not trying to make a point here with what emotions I'll have. But you did come up with one in which I will feel sad. I can come up with multiple ones where I won't, though.

The other three teams suck. If one of them happens to win over us, then by that point we will have realized that we sucked even worse than a sucky team. Tough to feel too disappointed in that case.

Well, sure. If we suck more than three sucky teams, then it would be disappointing. But the point remains that those teams suck. And I still think we are better.

I can still hold those convictions, while acknowledging that we are in a race now. We've been in a race the whole season. When we got 5.5 back, we were always going to be in a race. So, now I want us to win this race against those sucky teams.

I too would like to win the division. But if we can't win it over three crappy teams, I can't imagine I'll feel disappointed. More embarrassed.

Bottom line? The Cubs are playing sucky but have big-time talent. If they play up to their potential, they will win the division by 7 games. If they continue to play like they are bored, then one of those three sucky teams will win the division and the Cubs and their underachieving asses can go away for a few months.

I'd ask wtf you were talking about but I'm sure you do not know.

I guess I'll have to step back from this convo and figure out for myself why what I'm saying doesn't make sense. This is obviously on me as multiple people are calling me out.

Either way, go Cubs.

There's like no scenario where I could be embarrassed about a group of players that just won the World Series. Disappointed and super frustrated? Absolutely. But, I also know they're going to be awesome again regardless of how this year goes and basebally things happen.

A 100 win team the year before winning 15 less games with the same roster back and no major injuries until now would be pretty damn embarassing.

The Yankees won 16 less games between 98-99 and another 11 less games between 99-00 with very similar rosters but I don't think any Yankees fans were embarrassed to win titles in all 3 seasons.

Also maybe no devistating injuries but Hendricks missed almost 2 months, Zobrist a month and appears like the injury is going to torpedo the rest of his season, Heyward a couple of weeks, Russell is on the DL, and now Contreras will probably miss a few weeks at a minimum. We've definitely been hit harder than last year minus Schwarber but now that we're seeing him struggle to hit .200 I wonder how much of a loss he actually was.

i would never be "embarrassed" of a sports team because it's a group of other adult men or women that i have no actual affiliation and i cannot control the outcome of the games. that's so silly to me that i cannot even wrap my mind around it.

frustrated is about as far as i'd go. but, like i've always done, if the cubs fail to make the playoffs (or even get bumped quickly) i'll be frustrated for about 24 hours and then i'll think about the times this year that were awesome and enjoyable and i'm over it.

i also just start focusing on my next sports team season - it's a cyclical thing year-round for me which i love.

Andy Green trying next level tactics against Joey Votto.

7th inning, guys on 1st and 2nd, 1 out, and Votto up. Yates (Who has had a good year) gets Votto to 2-2 and then pulls him for lefty closer Brad Hand who was warming up very quickly.

Hand walks Votto on the next 2 pitches.

Hand gets Duvall to strike out but then proceeds to give up a grand slam to Scooter Gennett and then another HR to Suarez.

He is probably going to get blasted for it but I actually liked the move.

The more I think about it, winning like 85 games winning the division barely while several other teams get all the attention and then winning the NLDS would be the complete opposite of embarrassing

I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with you on this point.

You've gotta be horsefeathering kidding me. I'm at the Nationals game tonight (not quite humble brag, let's call it a derwood). Tanner Roark has struggled all night despite giving up only 2 runs through 6 innings. He has given up 5 walks and a bomb to Stanton. The Nats are down 2-0 when the 8 hitter gets a leadoff double in B6. Roark comes up to the plate despite throwing 107 pitches and will be facing the top of the order for the 4th time to lead off the 7th. He lays down a sac bunt. What the actual horsefeathers Dusty?

I'm sure there's a fishing analogy to explain the reasoning
