Only way Glennon thing works out is by building a dominant defense so you can just hope for steady competence on offense rather than needing to score lots of points.

But only way they will build a dominant defense is if they actually start bringing in dominant players. And that isn't happening.

I mean, thats the case until we draft the rare franchise QB, right?

I remember the day of the Cutler trade, and how excited I was.

The Mike Glennon news falls a little short of that.

The Bears had the most money available to spend this offseason, correct?

Overpaying for a QB while missing out on all of the big name FA's that fit your needs is not a very good game plan.

But the point is they are pursuing the strategy of running a handcuffed offense. It's one thing to actually try and field an offense that can score points and failing because you got the wrong QB. But when you give a QB $15m/year, knowing he's not going to be putting up points, your strategy is to win with defense. In order to do that you need a defense that can win you games and the Bears aren't doing that either.

Well winning with a dominant D I think would be true with Cutler too, so thats a cash/cost wash. I do like Cutler better, but I'm not sure that difference is enough to have strong opinions on. So they are in the same predicament had they done what I would do and kept Cutler.

They didnt miss out on those guys because of Glennon though. And theres still other guys to get (and draft, which will be critical to building a dominant D)

A) You don't know that. Players can see the Bears are committing to Glennon and realize the team is a joke and not worth playing for.

B) JHC, this isn't about Glennon vs Cutler. This is about, if you're going this route, you better actually get studs on your defense and right now the Bears aren't getting studs on their defense.

Well neither of us knows either way, :dontknow:

Well you did bring up Glennon at the start of this discussion, but fine, I understand the point is more about the lack of D players committed right now.

Either way, its incredibly early to say the Bears aren't bringing in top D talent. Unfortunately the very best defenders who are REALLY worth blowing your load on were tagged. As it is now, we could conceivably do just as well for ourselves in FA on the third tier guys on day 3 and 4 verse the tier 2 guys on days 1 and 2.

You've got to get one of Bouye or Ryan. You've got to get a very solid S. You've got to resign Alshon or sign Pryor. And you need to make an upgrade somewhere else too.

Short of this, FA is a loss, IMO.

FWIW - sounds like Gilmore's deal is 5/70. Considering he is staying in division and going to the reigning champs, I imagine the Bears would have had to significantly beat that offer. Not sure Gilmore would be worth that cost. There are still some good CBs on the market, including Logan Ryan who the Pats won't be brigning back now (and I wonder if they can even retain Malcolm Butler).

And I guess they aren't out at Bouye yet. Titans frontrunner, but Bears have $13/m offer out ...

I won't get that specific, I think you can widen the list of acceptable CB and WR, but that would then be predicated on finding upgrades at other spots on the roster, as you'd likely be spending less.

I lol'd when Rapoport was on TV yesterday saying that unnamed free agents were texting him to confirm the Bears were in fact signing Glennon because they wanted to play for him because LEADER.
