I remember when the cheap and evil Ricketts paid $600 million for the Wrigley renovations out of their pockets instead of using public money. I also remember when the Cubs had the highest payroll in the NL last season. Go root for the Reds if you think the Cubs are cheap.

You remember incorrectly. The cubs were the 3rd highest payroll last year. Dodgers and Giants were both over the salary cap.

It's funny that everyone just assumes the Cubs are some cash cow for the Ricketts family that throws off tons of cash on a yearly basis directly into their pockets. It would be very surprising if that was even remotely the reality. With that said, sign Harper.

The Cubs are a cash cow for the Ricketts family or they wouldn't own them and spend money on improving Wrigley and the entire blocks around Wrigley. They are bending to the will of the other owners (and themselves) to not spend money to keep contracts down. Someday after Trump burns down the world and anthropologists from a distant planet discover the remains, they will find private communications between the owners showing collusion. Everyone knows it, but it seems impossible to do anything about it.

I know, I know... but this is the only fun I'm getting out of this offseason

If I was Bryce Harper and the White Sox offered me a 10 year contract worth 400 million, I'd still have to have a hard think about it

Seriously. What a shitty organization.

If collusion helps the Cubs sign Harper than more collusion please and thank you. Poor Bryce Harper may only get $380 million instead of $400. Maybe playing for the Cubs will get him more endorsement money and it will even out.

I have the utmost amount of faith in the cat. Shun the non-believers.

And according to his profile, he is a Purr-due grad, which makes him a pretty decent guy off the bat.

"Guys, I'm a once in a generation signing and I want to play for your team!"

"Ooooooh, ouch; don't know if we can fit you in between the Guy Fieri Chug 'n' Chow hotel & casino, and the kickbacks to the Proud Boys. We'll get back to you!"

The MLBN radio guys were just saying they were hearing Bryce doesn’t really want to go to Philly as well

The most important thing about this is that it takes McCutchen off the table for us. That was one of my dreaded scenarios...

It's about not spending past the Luxury Tax. It's a self-imposed salary cap. Meanwhile, the owners are able to hide profits and do shady accounting and claim they aren't making money.

Seems weird to be upset about the most optimistic piece of Cubs/Harper information that's come out.

Cubs not out, Harper wants to be here.

If the Cubs know Harper wants to be here, wouldn't it be smart to put out what they've been putting out for negotiation purposes?

That's just rich white guy accounting 101...They didn't get where they are by paying their fair share, and it's really not cool of you to expect otherwise.

Didn't we decide that Loxas was a questionable source?

So far the optimistic reports are from Plesac (not based on actual news just speculation), Dicaro, Charles the Cat and Tom Loxas. The pessimistic reports are from everyone else.

It just seems like the national reporters, the ones with the confirmed connected sources seem to be saying that the Cubs are definitively not interested, and many of them including the beat guys aren't even really discussing it as a possibility. You think there'd be one Rosenthal tweet with something like 'The Cubs are going to meet with Harper despite previously reported budget constraints" or something.

Loxas was saying they were out.
