I'm not scared of any of them. We have the best team in the NL and should beat whoever we play.

I want to see the best teams play each other, so horsefeathers the Mets, horsefeathers the Cards, bring on the Giants.

Probably Giants. I don't really think matchups or quality matters enough to make a meaningful difference in a short series. So it comes down to who I want to lose to the least. Having to put up with another "Hurr durr even year magic" run would suck, but not as bad as letting the Cardinals even out last year or the Mets double down on it.

Still rooting for Miami to make an improbable run.

I agree with most of the premise. Except I wouldn't really care too much if the Mets knocked us out. I mean, it would suck losing to anyone. Losing to the Mets again isn't going to hurt that much more. Losing to the Cards would definitely hurt more than imaginable, though. So, basically, I am of the opinion of: Anyone but the Cards. In which case, give me the Mets.

What are Mets fans saying?

We are the Cubs worst nightmare, though. We hit their pitchers surprisingly well, even with our horsefeathers lineup this year. If we somehow took game 1 of a series against them, they would all be collectively [expletive] themselves so hard

I want to tango with the Cubs. I can accept getting beat down by them but I love the idea of potentially torturing their fans one way or another.

Call me crazy but I really like our potential matchup against the Cubs, especially in a short series. That makes all the difference if you can win Game 1 on the road, just like last year.

And then several other posts saying "the Cubs are scared of us"

I've never found a pocket of reasonable Mets fans like you do with other fanbases. If there's a GRB of Mets fandom, I haven't come across it. They are all aggressively bad and dumb.

I've found a couple of reasonable Mets fans individually, but never in groups. I have like 5 friends that are Mets fans, and all but one of them are completely unbearable when it comes to talking about baseball.

I've never heard luck cited so much as when I've tried talking with them. Every Mets shortcoming or bad outing, "we're so unlucky". Everything I said about how and why the Cubs are pretty horsefeathering good this year, "they're just winning lucky games, get some pitching"

Both of my friends who are Mets fans are completely reasonable, likeable and fun to watch baseball with.

Sample size etc.

I'd prefer to face the team that doesn't have Thor or Madbum. And honestly, with how good we are, I'll be equally sad losing to any team in the NLDS, Cardinals or not.

Ugh, I really dislike Sheehan.

Independent of opponents, Cubs fans want this race to end pretty early. While the idea that these teams could have to grind all the way to Oct. 2 and perhaps into a playoff sounds good, it has the potential to hurt the Cubs by forcing the teams — and the eventual survivor — to use their best starting pitcher prior to the wild card game on Oct. 5. The Cubs want, more than anything, for Syndergaard and Martinez to face off in that game, meaning they could pitch just once in the Division Series. It’s best for the Cubs for there to be no last-day drama, and no Game 163.

The only Mets fan I know spent most of 2008 whining about how Johan Santana wasn't a good pitcher because he had a 9-8 record or something. He also honestly believes the Cubs are cursed.

Did he not even bother looking at the schedule. Martinez pitches today and is scheduled for Friday also. That would mean he'd have to go on 2 days rest to pitch Monday or 3 days for Tuesday. If he went short rest Tuesday, to pitch in the first two games of the NLDS, he'd have to go on 2 days rest (Game 1) or 3 days again (Game 2). If Matheny really wants to do that, go for it.

Bumgarner is in the same boat. He pitched yesterday and is scheduled for Friday as well.

Syndergaard is different now but he was scheduled to pitch yesterday and Friday which would have put him in the same boat as the other two. But Sheehan couldn't have known Syndergaard would be scratched when he wrote that.

I don't want the Cardinals to have the privilege of making the playoffs, and I don't want the Mets to have the dignity of playing a full series.

this is the right answer

If they get Thor lined up twice thanks to this strep throat delay, I rescind my vote

Noah Syndergaard pitches tonight in what could be his final regular season start, depending on how things shake out. He’d be lined up to pitch on the final day of the regular season (Sunday) if needed, which would in turn line him up to kick off the NLDS if the Mets got there (and thus could start twice). Cubs fans should not want to see that, so I guess here’s hoping Syndergaard pitches the Wild Card Game, or is needed for a tiebreaker after the final game of the regular season. If he starts on Sunday, then seeing the Mets in the NLDS becomes a whole lot less palatable.

I would assume it depends on whether they need to win on Sunday or not, which might not be evident until the night before.

I'd like to take a moment to complain about how awful and dumb it is to end the regular season on a Sunday and not open the playoffs until Friday. I know they are gaming for weekend TV ratings, but in my dream world you play both WC games the day after the season and open the playoffs the next day. If you have to cram some tiebreakers in, find a way.

Yeah, somehow that eluded me the first time I read it.

Also I forgot that all the games are being played at the same time on Sunday. That could really be fun if these teams stay close.

where do i point out that i have a buddy who despite being seemingly completely normal otherwise, is a tinfoil whack job and believes the illuminati or some numerology stuff that says the dodgers are going to win the world series this year (also the vikings in the superbowl iirc)
