well, I have the honor of starting possibly the most anticlimactic game thread of the year. The Cubs lost yesterday but are the best baseball team in the world and clinched the NL Central yesterday, anyway. It was only a matter of time. I didn't even know I was back on the game thread lineup but soccer10k PM'ed me and apparently it's my time up. It would be very 2016-cub-like to inexplicably go on a 6-game winning streak now because this team is so awesome that they will win hungover tomorrow afternoon with their scrubs. jk the cubs don't have scrubs.

anyway, back to business. the brewers will be starting someone with the last name of Anderson:

He seems not noteworthy. Even if he was he will be donged so dongs shall come.

Cubs start Lackey. He's a horse. No, not a work horse. Just a horse.

I'm not sure the Cubs will care too much about this game, but I guess there is still HFA to consider. I woke up at 3:00 am (EST) and threw this thing together because clinched or not, you gotta support the team

projected lineup:

coghlan LF

lastella 3B

baez 2B

szczur RF

contreras 1B

almora CF

kawasaki SS

ross C

lackey P

I'll guess that it's the same besides

Coghlan to first

Contreras to catch

Soler in the OF

Ross sitting out.

Then at some point Cogs will misplay a ball at first and Lackey will flip out.

My guess:

RF Szczur

LF Coghlan

2B La Stella

1B Contreras

3B Baez

C Federowicz

CF Almora

P Lackey

SS Kawasaki

Dang I forgot about Fed, I believe he and his wife just had a baby the other day too.

Being as this is a game thread, I read this and first thought it read Fred : (

The B team is going to rattle off 7 runs, but............

LOOKING AT THE RADAR, I DOUBT THEY GET THIS ONE IN.

Not sure if you are kidding, weather looks fine to me until the evening. We do NOT need any rainouts to give us one less potential win because unless the rainout is in the Cardinals series next week, they will not replay any rainouts against the Brewers, Reds or Pirates

My favorite was 2003, mostly because I think it was somewhat unexpected that we would clinch with a day to spare considering it took 2 Cubs win and an Astros loss the day before to set up a meaningless game 162. Dusty did give some of the starters a start but pulled them after 1 PA, leaving this lineup

Goodwin, RF

Womack, 2B

Glanville, CF

O'Leary, LF

Martinez, SS

Karros, 1B

Ojeda, 3B

Paul, C

Mitre, P

It will be interesting to see how Joe rests guys moving forward. I could see guys getting more rest now through the end of next week then going with a regular lineup everyday into the playoffs over the last week of the season. It wouldn't overly surprise me to see Fowler, Zobrist, Heyward, or Russell to get 2-3 days off in a row. I'm guessing Bryant/Rizzo will play a little more because of being in the MVP race.

It's a game day thread joke.

I too hate rain outs.

Maddon is handling it properly. Once Strop comes back, I could get see him more reps given his time off. I would still like them to go about 75-80 pitches even with the 6 man rotation. I'm just scoreboard watching hoping STL and SF make the playoffs.

I would play each individual starter once every 2-3 games for this homestand, and then unless a guy is banged up, play the starters as normal for the Pirates series, and Friday of the Reds series. Do a JV lineup on Saturday against the Reds, and then get the starters 2 ABs on Sunday and pull them.

So for Rizzo it would look something like this

F Off

S Off

S On

M On

T Off

W On

F Off

S On

S Off

M On

T On

W On

F On

S Off

S 2 AB

That gives him 9 starts in the final 15 games, and 8 days off including normal off days.

Too much time off. 1-1.5 games off per week is more than enough to rest for playoffs, but they have to stay sharp and they should still be working to clinch HFA and more importantly the ability to face a WC team that had to throw its ace already.
