The Cubs go for the four game sweep this afternoon, sending Jake out against impressive youngster Zach Davies. Davies, who has won 4 of his last 5 decisions, will surely experience the dongage and the Cubs will get out the brooms.

I love day games, they allow me to be a better husband and father (albeit a worse employee).

Ben Zobrist is a very productive hitter, and this is basically just me meatballing, but continually seeing him in the cleanup spot when he hasn't donged since July 9th is kind of driving me a little insane. Especially since there are young, vital dongsmen lurking lower in the lineup. Edited by Sammy Sofa

I guess I understand it. I think Joe likes having S, R, L, S in the top 4 so it gives him great match up versitility. Regardless of a LHP or RHP you have 3 of the first 4 hitters in a favorable matchup (and Bryant and Rizzo both have about an .880 OPS against like handed pitchers).

There's the contact hitter hitting after the first wave of mashers component of it too but Zobrist has hit 4 SFs this year and grounded into 14 DPs so it probably hasn't been a big benefit there.

I do agree that his .385 OBP and ability to have long ABs to make the pitchers work is something you'd like a #2 hitter to have, maybe Joe will move it around before the season is over.

In addition to Zobrist's contact skills, his patience can really drive up the SP's pitch count if you have one of the previous dongsmiths on base. Also, I think someone alluded that having Bryant hitting 2nd is that they can take advantage of his superior baserunning ahead of Rizzo and Zobrist, while still having his shiny .386 OBP as well.

One would think they would want that juicy OBP in front of Rizzo and Bryant, but what do I know.

Or you'd want juicy OBP in front of the guy who walks or puts the ball in play 85-90% of the time

Posted
Also, in many cases you'll be using Zobrist as a table setter for those dongsmiths later in the lineup.

It's not like it's a BAD thing, but since Joe seems to have moved away from batting someone besides the pitcher 9th as much as he did before, I figured he'd still want more guys on base ahead of Bryant and Rizzo; as good as Addison is, I'm a simple creature and I want many men on base for the dong monsters.

Hey Guys. Registered a long time ago but never post much. A long time lurker, but decided to enter the fray.

Good to see Joe get Jorgie some more at bats against a righties. Argubly our best hitter last post season, so keep him fresh and ready to dong the opposition to death in October.

Maybe Maddon's thoughts on batting Zobrist 4th are that he gets to bat 1st in the 2nd inning if Fowler-Bryant-Rizzo go 1-2-3 in the 1st. (hahahahahah)
