i guess the main thing that bothers me about the uproar over the all star game HFA thing is that i don't remember there being any uproar before, when something somehow even dumber (even/odd year) determined it. it's not that i disagree that it's dumb. it's that it's always been dumb and nobody seemed to care or notice before.

amen brother

people who get all worked up about the asg / hfa thing just want to complain about something

there's no actual good way

Just don't let whether or not you have lights determine hfa (yes I know that is a myth)

It was dumb but at least alternating was fair and that's likely why no one raised a fuss before.

My gripe is that the ASG should be 100% about the players and not about the outcome of the game.

How was it fair? A given year's league champion had no control over whether they were good in an odd year or even year. Just because the selection alternates evenly doesn't really make it fair in any practical sense.

At least, with the current system, that team would have something resembling a fifty fifty chance in any given year. Materially, though, it's not much of a difference either way.

Its fair like how a weekend visitation schedule is fair.

Technically, the Cubs have a magic number for each opponent, so here they are down the line:

Team #
----------------
Rangers 29
Nationals 29
Indians 28
Blue Jays 26
Dodgers 26
Red Sox 26
Orioles 25
Giants 24
Tigers 23
Cardinals 23
Mariners 22
Marlins 21
Royals 21
Astros 21
Yankees 21
Pirates 21
Mets 19
White Sox 17
Rockies 15
Phillies 14
Brewers 11
Athletics 10
Reds 10
Rays 10
Angels 9
Padres 8
Diamondbacks 7
Twins 4
Braves 1

A magic number for an American League team is completely worthless because we need the All Star game to mean something.

It still would've been worthless before the All Star game "meant" anything.

Not if MLB did the right thing and awarded HFA for the World Series based off record,

(cue the unbalanced schedule argument)

Using each league's interleague record seems like a natural solution.

The record for the whole league will hopefully mitigate some of the rivalry issues of individual teams.

With interleague and a relative competitive balance between leagues (it obviously changes year to year but not by much) just make the best record in MLB the home field owner. It at least gives a carrot to teams that have pretty much secured their spot to stay competitive in September. Isn't that what MLB wants for viewers to keep watching? (A month of games vs one All Star game)

When I was a kid the ASG was the coolest thing around. There was no inter-league play and little national TV coverage of baseball if you lived outside of a big city market -- it was a chance to see players and match ups you otherwise would never see.

Now though, it's slightly more interesting for me than the NBA ASG, and I hate the NBA.
