I hope stem cells work out well for Richards. It's the now and even more the future, the less blades on arms the better

I thought I had read that those types of stem cell treatments (just shooting these guys up with stem cells like, I think, Colon did) were quackery. Is there something that has changed? Is this something different?

It's going to be insane if/when they can grow people replacement organs and eliminate the need for transplant lists and anti-rejection meds and all that.

From what Inunderstand, and I think we both know how little that is, there's [expletive] doctors out there but otherwise it is the direction athletes are going for injuries. Kobe and Colon are the most famous athlete cases IIRC, but it's becoming more and more common for guys to shoot for the alternative in hopes of avoiding the knife. It is not yet a fully refined process, but the only way for that to happen is for players to keep giving it a shot - worst case is they get the TJ.

I thought there was talk that, with these treatments being largely untested long term, the stem cells could cause cell multiplication and, thus, tumors.

I love J-Hey, but I get really confused at how his overall numbers translate to him being worth 15 million this season. The defense is glorious but there is no way I'm watching a guy that people would give $15 million to.

But I know the way things are calculated proves me wrong.

Numbers for $ per FA WAR have hit as high as $9-10 million in recent years.

If true, that fact should be enough for people to doubt the validity of the measure.

Here is another question. Say in a fake world that teams knew Heyward would be this same exact player next season. Does everyone sign him for one year and $15 million based on the way he got his WAR? I assume yes since WAR is WAR but it's so weird.

Does everyone sign him for that if they know this is how he produces? Well, for one, lots of teams don't buy into his defense being as valuable as the numbers say it is. That's why he wasn't as sought after as you'd expect a 26 year old 5+ win player to be. If most of the market believed he was as good as the numbers say, he would've gotten like $30+M a year for 10 years or something. That's why the Cubs got such a good deal on him.

why would that fact (which is essentially just an example of inflation) in particular put the validity of the measure into question?

Good point.

That said do the people who buy into his defense even think it's this valuable, or do they think that only provided he's at least average at the plate?

The value of his defense is independent of his value at the plate. His runs saved on defense are what they are, whether he sucks at the plate or not. He can also lose you runs at the plate (which he no doubt has this year), which is why he isn't that same 5ish win player this year.

Makes sense. Thanks.

Oh my, I had forgotten how broken Soto's throwing mechanics are. He has to end up on all fours each time he throws the ball back to the mound.

i was going to miss dex when i resigned myself he'd sign elsewhere in 2016. I think, however, I would miss him more in 2017. Please re-sign this guy again, Theo.
