It's so hilariously sad how shortsighted he's being; the guy's obviously a platoon player at best, yet he's acting like he's being denied a starting job. On team as stacked as the Cubs. I don't even know how to process that. So he gets himself booted off a team this good to, what, go be a platoon player on a crappier team? Amazing Jersey-logic there.

step off george

BUT I BROUGHT YOU SANDWICHES.

He said step off, George

La Stella...contemplated retiring?? He hasn't even gotten a free agent contract yet ... He's gonna skip out millions of dollars and the guarantee of a life of leisure?

It's not football or something where retiring early might save your life. So strange.

I enjoy Tommy LaStella for what he is, but he's no Curt Flood. He's a utility infielder who has yet to stay healthy for more than a few months at a time. He's better than Coghlan, but that's like being a better band than Nickeback. And with roster expansion around the corner, he's having a tantrum over 3 weeks in Iowa.

So if Jesse Rogers' article that includes quotes from La Stella is correct that he and the FO aren't upset with each other, can't we just DFA Coghlan now and forget this ever happened?

That wasn't my read on the quotes

If LaStella won't report to the minors, we're going to have to search for a lefty bat because we won't have LaStella on the major league roster...

Cubs insisting he makes a token AAA appearance before activation

I wish the guy all the best with whatever is bothering him, but I think the Cubs have to shut him down for the rest of the season. This is an unnecessary distraction from a player who, while valuable, is not a vital part of the team and can be replaced. If the guy can't accept doing what's best for the organization and accepting a three week trip to Iowa, he shouldn't be with the Cubs.

I don't really think it's as big of a distraction as you think. Pretty sure I read that Rizzo didn't even know until asked about it yesterday that La Stella hadn't reported. The Cubs aren't in a race for the division...there's no pressure on them right at the moment. I don't think it's all that urgent. Having La Stella available is better for the team than not having him available.

I would imagine this is most of the players response when asked about Tommy

Yeah, I can't imagine why they'd have to shut him down, or how that would help anything.

Disagree; bears think about seals a LOT:

This story has officially jumped the shark for me. Only something nuts like a murder investigation would get me interested again.

So if somebody clubbed the seal you'd be interested?

Coghlan reached out to Seal Boy:

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/195055866/chris-coghlan-has-texted-with-tommy-la-stella/

CHICAGO -- Outfielder Chris Coghlan is one of several Cubs players who have reached out to Tommy La Stella, who opted not to report to Triple-A Iowa when he was optioned on July 29. La Stella was batting .295 when he was sent to the Minors to make room for Coghlan.

"I texted him and we've talked," Coghlan said Thursday. "I hate that the media makes it me or him, because it has nothing to do with that. Anyone who has been a part of baseball knows that. There's a lot of things that happen from the quote-unquote political side."

"Just like anything in life, some things aren't fair and some things are," Coghlan said. "He's performed and he's chosen to take his route, however he chooses, and that's his decision for his personal career. I can't fault him for whatever decision he makes.

"I understood [the trade in February]," Coghlan said. "I didn't like it because I wanted to be here. You don't get to chose that. I'm the employee. I don't have a choice. I have to go be a professional."

Coghlan said he's never seen a player refuse to report as La Stella has.

"At the end of the day, it's his decision and he's a grown man," Coghlan said. "At the end of the day, we can all speculate, ridicule, encourage, we can choose whatever side of the argument, but it's his personal career and he can choose what decision he wants to make."

Tommy had no comment; only thoughts of dark, dark revenge:
