The buyout is happening either way, though. It doesn't make a qualifying offer any more difficult.

Right but I didn't know if they'd want to invest another 16 on top of the 9 they are already out.

Why would they view it like that? They also probably don't want to just pay him that money and lose him. It absolutely doesn't matter. That money is basically just money that is deferred from this year. They have to pay it either way. It won't factor into their thinking at all.

But I figure it goes into their 2017 roster budget and so it has to be part of the money we can spend next year.

Or no?

Sunk cost, but doubt someone in at that point of their career coming off a career year signs a one year deal.

Agreed. I don't think he'd accept but will Cubs be willing to offer on the chance he does?

Yes. Absolutely. Why wouldn't they? He is worth a one-year, $16 million contract. There is no question they offer it.

I'm not entirely opposed (again) to a 3 year deal

I'm sure it's been accounted for since the contract was structured the way it was

Who knows how it's budgeted, but it shouldn't affect their specific decision on Fowler any more than any other roster decision they make. Just call it overhead, pretend it's a part of Rizzo's contract, whatever. It's gone.

I don't understand what you are getting at. The buyout always was part of that budget. The question is: Do they think Dexter Fowler is worth $16 million for one more season? Yes, they absolutely do. Or at least they should. The buyout simply doesn't figure into that answer.

I'm glad I asked the question. What I gather is that most here tonight think we will at least get a first round pick if we lose Dex. I like that.

Sorry for derailing the game thread with it, though.

No, it's fine. At least we are discussing something interesting, instead of whining about the offense or whatever.

But, to get back on track... that was very fun. Keep doing that, fellas.

I guess I'm asking like this: let's say the Cubs have $170 budgeted for 2017. Dex counts for 9 million of that 170. So now we are down to 161. Do the Cubs pay him another $16 at that point? (Some think we have already accounted for the 9 on this year's budget but I'm not so sure).

horsefeathers I hope this makes sense. I'm getting into the territory where I'm getting embarrassed for myself.

Agreed. Ideal game thread is discussions like that (maybe more focused on the game, but whatever) interspersed every few innings with 6-8 people posting some variation of 'DONGGGS'.

If we have to have a garbage human, I'm glad it's a relief pitcher. I can put my hate on hold for 5-10 minutes while he throws 103 mph by hitters.

(now that I've looked it up) the buyout is only $5MM, not that it makes a huge difference, but that's likely already accounted for as part of this year's budget. I think both sides always saw it as "here's $13MM and let's try it again next year".

Agreed. But if there were a way he could do the same for 7-8 innings, I could maybe put mine on hold for 2 and a half hours, give or take.

You mean it's not supposed to be 2-3 guys flipping out when things aren't going our way, and 7-8 guys flipping out on them for flipping out?

Only reason why I think it might be budgeted for next year is that the signing came late and with our payroll already high they couldn't fit it all into this year's budget. Sort of why Zobrist and Hey aren't making a ton this year either.

I would really love a gif of the closeup ESPN had of the Sox' starter right before he was taken out, with his weirdly twitching/clenching jaw after Baez annihilated his world.

This is kinda surreal guys

Yeah, a packed Wrigley with everyone on their feet for a full inning....This guy is a spectacle.

Meatballs love the spectacle of someone hitting 100+ mph and watching the speeds come up on the board. When he was with the Reds the place would be half-empty and still go nuts and get on their feet once he came in.

Replace Meatballs with Everyone and you are right.
