Ah, well. Sometimes supposedly smart managers make boneheaded decisions. Nothing to be done about it.

I can see the logic for running for Rizzo but boy I really hate using relievers that aren't your very best in this spot. Not having Rondon or Strop in the game here is bad bad bad. If you give up a run you lose, it's more important than a save situation!

this is unquestionably maddon's biggest blind spot regarding obvious stuff good managers can do to give teams an advantage. i'd love to hear his reasoning.

lost us the game, too.

maybe this is why theo decided he had to build a super bullpen. give joe so many good pitchers he uses someone good in that spot by accident.

had two relievers who strike out over 35% of hitters in the pen, used neither

maddon talks a very big game about being flexible and open minded about bullpen usage but he really isn't

Montgomery's stuff sure hasn't looked very impressive so far.

95 mph fastball from a lefty is pretty nice, but not so much when it's belt high in the middle of the plate against a bad hitter on an 0-2 count.

If Szczur doesn't run for Rizzo, Heyward is in CF and probably lasers one home there

my initial thought, as well

Dammit. I wanna dominate baseball again

34-33 in the last 67. That's 41% of the season.

There is a much better team lurking, just Not sure when it's going to show up

Now 12-16 in one run games and 3-4 in extra innings. Not a good sign.

That probably doesn't mean much. Unless they've all been ones where Joe fucked up the bullpen 6 ways to Sunday

yup. outside of some efforts to extend rondon a bit (which didn't really work), he's as by the book as anybody. even when the book is wrong.

frustrating loss.

He didn't even do the 'well I tried to steal an inning but now there's a runner in scoring position so we'll bring in a better reliever to shut things down' that normally happens. Not great.
